Moose drop last game to Monarchs in shootout

February 13, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Manitoba Moose News Release

After winning three games against the Monarchs this season, the Moose dropped their last regular season match-up against the club 3-2 in a shootout on Friday night. Jason Jaffray and Maxime Fortunus scored for Manitoba in regulation time while Jason Krog was the only sniper who capitalized in the shootout. Manitoba still remains in the league's top spot with 76 points.

In their last regular season matchup, the Moose and Monarchs got underway at the XL Center with Curtis Sanford manning the pipes for the visitors, opposite Daniel Taylor.

At 11:36, Tommy Maxwell and Richard Clune exchanged pleasantries and then punches near the visiting bench. After Maxwell lost his balance and fell to the ice, both players were handed five-minute fighting majors.

Two consecutive Monarch penalties in the second period, gave Manitoba four-minutes with an extra attacker. Even though the Moose couldn't capitalize on either opportunity, they were able to increase their shot count to six.

At 6:48 Manitoba's penalty kill line-up, made their first appearance when Captain Mike Keane was penalized for interference. After the first penalty expired, the Moose were back on the disadvantage when Jason Krog was put away for holding. Manitoba's penalty killers, along with key saves by Sanford, ensured the home team wouldn't be able to break their goose-egg and play resumed to five-on-five.

52 seconds into the third period saw instant scoring action from the Moose, when Jason Jaffray snapped the puck passed Taylor to earn the first lead of the night.

Outshooting the Moose, 21-13, the Monarchs finally translated their shot lead into a goal, when Marc-Andre Cliché tied the game when he snuck the puck through Sanford's five-hole.

At 12:14, the Monarchs broke the tie. Vladimir Dravecky surged towards Sanford and slapped the puck over his shoulder to put the home team on top, 2-1.

Guillaume Desbiens' slashing call, put the Monarchs on the powerplay with three minutes left in the contest. The Monarchs weren't able to extend their lead any further with the extra attacker and the final minute of play was crucial for the Moose to tie the game.

Opting for an extra attacker, the Moose had six skaters on the ice and Maxime Fortunus tied the game at two with seconds left to force overtime.

Overtime

Jason Krog's high-sticking call put the Monarchs on a one-minute advantage in the early seconds of overtime. Despite three chances, Manchester couldn't break Sanford on the powerplay. Five-minutes proved too short and the game was forced into a shootout.
