Syracuse Crunch News Release
Syracuse, NY (February 13, 2009) - The Syracuse Crunch defeated the Grand Rapids Griffins 2-1 in a shootout tonight in front of 4,624 fans at the War Memorial at Oncenter
Grand Rapids got on the board first with a goal by Logan Pyett 3:55 into the first. Pyett received the puck from Darren Haydar at the top of point and ripped a shot past Crunch goaltender Sebastian Dahm. Ryan Oulahen picked up the other helper on the play.
The Crunch were able to put more pressure on the Griffins in the second by out-shooting their opponent. 17-12. Griffins goaltender and Syracuse native Jimmy Howard was forced to make 17 saves to keep the score 1-0 in Grand Rapids' favor. Syracuse was given three power-play opportunities in the second period, including a one minute, fifty second 5-on-3 advantage they were unable to capitalize on.
Derek MacKenzie leveled the score at 1-1 after scoring a shorthanded goal 2:43 into the third. The Crunch had been left shorthanded after Trevor Frischmon was sent to the box for goalie interference at 1:48. Just over a minute later, MacKenzie intercepted the puck at the blue line leaving him one-on-one with Howard. He skated in and roofed the puck over Howard's right shoulder to pull the Crunch even. MacKenzie's goal increased his scoring streak to a Crunch individual-high five games.
The two teams remained at a standoff for the rest of regulation and the additional five-minute overtime period, forcing a shootout.
Syracuse sent Mike York out to take the first shot in the shootout and he netted what would eventually be the game winner by slipping the puck through the pads of Howard.
Maksim Mayorv and Steve Kelly also netted goals for the Crunch in the tiebreaker, while Dahm turned away all three of the Griffin shooters to pick up the win.
CRUNCHABLES: MacKenzie's shorthanded goal was the Crunch's second in as many games...It was also MacKenzie's fifth goal in as many games. He's tallied six points in the last five games (4g 1a)...While the Crunch defeated the Griffins at the War Memorial at Oncenter, Syracuse's parent club (Columbus Blue Jackets) defeated the Griffins parent club (Detroit Red Wings) 3-2 at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus.
