New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Manchester, NH- Al Quintana and Cody Haerther hit back-to-back, two-out RBI singles in the bottom of the fourth inning, but it wasn't enough to offset the top of the inning, when the Akron Aeros scored five times en route to a 5-2 victory over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on Tuesday night at Merchantsauto.com Stadium.
Akron (41-21) snapped a scoreless tie in the fourth when they sent nine men to the plate against losing pitcher Luis Perez. Jose Constanza (0-for-3, BB, R) walked, Cristo Arnal (1-for-4, R) and Nick Weglarz (1-for-4, R) singled to load the bases, and Carlos Santana's grounder was mishandled by Fisher Cats' shortstop Luis Perez for an error. Constanza scored on the play for a 1-0 lead. Beau Mills (1-for-2, 2 RBI, R, BB, HBP) then lined a two-run single to right and Carlos Rivero (1-for-3, 2B, BB, RBI) capped the inning with a run-scoring double to left, making the score 5-0.
New Hampshire (28-36) responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning when Brian Dopirak (2-for-4, R) singled off starting pitcher Scott Lewis, a member of the Cleveland Indians, who went 3.2 innings on a Major League injury rehabilitation appearance. With two outs, Adam Calderone (1-for-3, R, HBP) singled to left off reliever Josh Tomlin, Quintana (1-for-4, RBI) knocked in Dopirak with a single up the middle, and Haerther (2-for-3, RBI) delivered an RBI single to center, trimming the Aeros' lead to 5-2.
Tomlin (6-4) settled down from there, retiring 10 of the final 11 hitters he faced to notch the victory. The right-hander yielded three hits, struck out three and hit a batter.
Vinnie Pestano worked a perfect ninth inning to record his Eastern League-leading 17th save.
Perez (4-5) was charged with five runs, four earned, in seven innings. The left-hander surrendered five hits, fanned five, walked two and hit a batter.
The Fisher Cats and the Aeros play a twi-night doubleheader on Wednesday at Merchantsauto.com Stadium. The first of two seven-inning games finds right-hander Randy Boone (4-4, 4.22) on the mound against Akron right-hander Jeanmar Gomez (5-2, 2.82) at 6:05pm. New Hampshire's Adrian Martin (0-0, 2.33) gets a spot start in the nightcap. Akron has not named a starting pitcher. Radio coverage begins at 5:45pm with the BayRing Pre-Game Show on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Bob Lipman and Mike Murphy.
