Connecticut Shuts Out Trenton in Pitcher's Duel
June 16, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
Connecticut Defenders News Release
TRENTON, NJ- With an Eastern League's best road record (22-9), the Connecticut Defenders (36-28) didn't skip a beat on day one of a six road-trip as they shutout the Trenton Thunder 4-0 Tuesday night at Waterfront Park.
A three run eighth inning provided enough cushion for the Defenders as they took game one of the best of three series.
A matchup of two stud prospects was good enough for the price of admission but both impressed as they dazzled in a pitcher's duel.
Trenton's RHP-Zach McAllister retired the first seven Defender batters he faced before allowing a hit. Connecticut eventually got to the righty in the fourth with a leadoff single by 2B-Brock Bond who advanced to second on CF-Mike McBryde sac bunt and to third on a groundout to first by 3B-Brad Boyer. 1B-Brett Pill finished it off with an RBI base hit to give the Defenders a 1-0 lead.
Both teams traded zeros as Defender's starter, RHP-Tim Alderson (3-1) put together one of his best performances of the season at one point retiring eleven in a row. Alderson worked the zone making only a few mistakes as he walked a pair but in the end pitched seven scoreless innings of two hit ball and fanned five in the win.
McAllister (5-3) might have stayed on the bump a little to long as Connecticut finally touched him up in the eighth. A leadoff single by C-Jackson Williams followed by a Bond single put McBryde in a sac bunt opportunity to advance the runners. McBryde laid a bunt down which was fielded by McAllister who fired it wide of the third base bag allowing Williams to score. Brett Pill then delivered the final blow, pulling a two RBI single inside the third bag to give Connecticut a 4-0 cushion. Pill drove the offense going 3 for 4 with four RBI.
Defender's reliever, LHP-Ben Snyder pitched two scoreless innings to complete the shutout.
Tomorrow's game two matchup keeps the theme of pitcher's duel as Defenders RHP-Henry Sosa (5-0) looks to remain undefeated against Trenton's RHP-Ivan Nova (5-3). First pitch is slated for 7:05pm at Waterfront Park.
