South Carolina Stingrays News Release

North Charleston, S.C. - The South Carolina Stingrays put up 51 shots on net, over 20 more than their average number, but couldn't put enough behind Craig Kowalski as the Stingrays fell for the fourth straight time, by a score of 5-3.

"I really thought we played well tonight," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "Just like in last week's game against them, we out played them 5 on 5, but it was the special teams play that was the difference."

In the first period the Gladiators took a 1-0 lead when Jim Jackson scored his 6th goal of the season, most for defenseman in the ECHL. The Rays would tie it up at 1 when Mary Guerin scored his 3rd goal of the season with assists from Travis Morin and Cail MacLean. The goal came at 4:44. Before the period ended, however, the Gladiators would once again take the lead, 2-1, on Lou Dickenson's 7th goal of the year.

Gwinnett would score the first goal of the second period as well, giving them a 3-1 lead. Mike Hamilton got a power play goal, his 4th goal of the season. South Carolina would cut into the lead on Steve Pinizzotto's 2nd goal of the game from Morin and Chris Chaput. The goal came at 13:55, and after 40 minutes of play, the Rays trailed 3-2.

The third period again proved to be the deciding one for the Stingrays. Andy Brandt scored his 4th goal of the season to make the score 4-2. It was a short handed goal, the first time the Rays have given up a shorty all year. With less than 3 minutes left in the game, the Stingrays struck to make it a 1 goal game. Andrew Andricopolous scored his 2nd goal of the season, from Morin and MacLean at 17:27 to make it 4-3. The Rays pulled goaltender Davis Parley for the extra attacker, and got a power play as well, but could not score 6 on 4, and gave up a short handed empty net goal to Hamilton, his second goal of the game.

The winning goaltender was Kowalski who stopped 48 of 51 shots. The losing goaltender was Parley who stopped 31 of 35 shots he faced. The Rays went 0 for 8 on the power play, while killing off 3 of 4 short handed situations.

It doesn't get any easier for the Stingrays as they will play host to the Texas Wildcatters tomorrow night at the North Charleston Coliseum. Game time will be at 7:05 P.M. This will be your last chance to catch the Rays before they leave for Mississippi and Pensacola next week.
