Elmira Jackals News Release
ELMIRA, NY - Brett Pilkington and Shawn Weller struck for a goal and three assists each while goaltender Joel Martin stopped 16 shots for his second shutout of the year as the Elmira Jackals blanked the Trenton Devils 4-0 in front 3,837 fans at First Arena, the fifth sellout crowd of the season.
The win, combined with Cincinnati's 7-5 home loss to Dayton, lifted the Jackals into a share the North Division lead with 21 points.
Following a scoreless first period in which Elmira out shot Trenton 14-3, Pilkington got the Jackals on the board with a goal 1:34 into the second off of a pretty set-up from Weller.
Controlling the puck behind the enemy net, Weller created space for himself with a bank pass off the base of the net before reloading and wiring a pass to the crease. Pilkington was there to jam it home for his third of the season, all coming in the five games since being acquired last Wednesday from the Mississippi Sea Wolves.
Pilkington and Weller then combined to set the table for Bobby Robins on a Jackals power play with 3:11 left in the second period. Robins put second rebound past Davis Caruso (35 saves) for his seventh goal of the year, tying him with Pierre-Luc Faubert for the club lead. It doubled as Robins' team-high fifth power play strike.
Elmira tacked on two more goals in the third with Weller whipping home his second of the year from the mid slot at 6:24 on feeds from Pilkington and Jon Landry on another man advantage.
The evening closed at Landry blasted home his second of the season with Pilkington and Weller assisting to close out each of their four point nights.
The Jackals rang up a 39-16 shots advantage as they out shot an opponent for the first time in their past 11 games while converting two of seven chances on the power play while holding the Devils scoreless in five opportunities.
