Charlotte Checkers News Release

Charlotte, NC- Danny Welch scored the game winner and John Adams, Jordie Preston, and Scott Champagne all scored their first goals of the season as the Texas Wildcatters secured their ECHL-leading ninth road win of the season with a 7-3 drubbing of the Charlotte Checkers Friday night.

Charlotte (7-3-0-2) jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Jordan Owens beat Peter Aubry with a power play goal at 3:42 of the first period but Tim Cook would counter for Texas (11-2-0-3) with his second goal of the season three minutes later. Cook was assisted by Moises Gutierrez and Welch.

Max Taylor would lift Texas to a 2-1 advantage with his second goal in as many nights at 12:54, but Charlotte would respond to tie it before intermission with Owens registering his second goal at 13:29.

The game would remain close for much of the second period but would change abruptly with six and a half minutes remaining when Jared Nightingale would square off with Mike Grenzy. Beyond the fighting infractions, the altercation would result in a double-minor penalty for roughing and a "third man in" ejection for Nightingale. During the resulting power play, the ‘Catters would score the first of five unanswered goals in front of a crowd of 7,377.

Danick Bouchard got the ball rolling for Texas with a power play marker assisted by Jonathan Paiement and Welch at 15:24 and Welch would score what would prove the game winner just a minute later with a power play tally of his own. Texas would head to the locker room for the second intermission with a 4-2 lead.

Entering the third period, the next three goals would all be season-and in two cases career-firsts for Texas players.

Adams would find the back of the net for the first time this season on a goal assisted by Gutierrez and Ross Carlson at 5:58 to bring the lead to three goals. Preston would score his first professional goal on an unassisted play at 7:05, and Champagne would finally break through to score his first pro goal at 8:01, bringing the score to 7-2.

Champagne's goal would be the last of 29 Texas shots faced by Charlotte goalie A.J. Bucchino who was pulled for Len DiCostanzo after making 22 saves in 48 minutes.

Charlotte would find a way behind Aubry once more with a power play goal by Patrick Bordeleau with four minutes remaining.

Aubry would collect his second win in two nights, making 18 saves and lifting his season record to 6-2-0.
