Charlotte Checkers News Release
Charlotte, N.C. - Playing against the top ranked team in the ECHL tonight, the Checkers were defeated by the Texas Wildcatters, 7-3.
The traditional post-Thanksgiving Day game for Charlotte started off with a bang when Jordan Owens scored his first goal of the season when he took a nice feed from Dusty Jamieson and blasted a shot past Texas goaltender, Peter Aubry at 3:42 of the first period to the delight of the 7,377 fans in attendance. The Wildcatters would answer back in the form of a blueline bullet from Tim Cook that beat Checkers netminder, A.J. Bucchino at 6:25, tying the contest at 1-1. The Wildcatters would follow up with their first lead of the game after Max Taylor found a loose puck in the Checkers crease and banged it home at 12:54 bringing the game to a 2-1 Texas advantage. The Checkers weren't done yet though and Owens would provide the offense yet again. This time, Kaleb Betts streaked down the right wing boards and found an open Owens in the slot. Owens made a nice move and slipped the puck between the legs of Aubry at 13:29.
In the next stanza, the Wildcatters would sport a two-man advantage and strike for their second lead of the contest after Danick Bouchard netted a one-timer over the blocking shoulder of Bucchino at 15:21. On the ensuing man-advantage, the Wildcatters Dan Welch slipped the puck into the Checkers goal extending the lead to 4-2 at 16:44.
Texas wouldn't look back as they scored three more goals in the third period off the sticks of John Adams, Jordie Preston and Scott Champagne. These goals signaled the end for Bucchino's night and Len DiCostanzo played the rest of the period stopping all three shots that came his way. The Checkers could only muster one more goal when Patrick Bordeleau knotted his first career professional goal stuffing a loose puck past Aubry in the late stages of the final period as the Wildcatters skated away with a 7-3 victory.
Notes: Bucchino surrendered seven goals on 29 shots...Aubry allowed three goals on 21 attempts...Both teams went 2-8 on the man-advantage...
