San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO ââ There's only 22 games left in the regular season and the San Diego Gulls remain in unfamiliar territory... out of a playoff spot. After taking three points in three games last week, the Blue and Orange remain fifth in the West Division, but now (as of Monday) six points behind the Fresno Falcons for the last playoff spot in the division.
San Diego began the week with a shootout loss to the North Division-leading Wheeling Nailers. Then after getting shutout Friday in Fresno, the Gulls rebounded with a solid win over the all-of-a-sudden struggling Bakersfield Condors. San Diego still has two games in hand on Fresno and is just one point ahead of the sixth-place and surging Idaho Steelheads (as of Monday).
WEEK IN REVIEW:
Feb. 16 vs. Wheeling: The Nailers out-shot the Gulls 34-18, but it took a shootout for them to claim a 3-2 victory over the Blue and Orange. After a scoreless first period, San Diego drew first blood 3:35 into the second. Wheeling tied it, but the Gulls regained the lead 30 seconds later. The Nailers tied it again one minute into the third period and that's how the game stayed through regulation and the five-minute overtime period. In the shootout session, the Nailers tallied twice, while the Gulls only scored once.
Feb. 18 @ Fresno: San Diego's Eddy Ferhi made 30 saves on 31 shots, but Fresno's Brett Jaeger stopped all 31 shots, leading the Falcons to a 1-0 victory. The only goal of the game came 3:31 into the second period on a power-play goal by John Wroblewski. Otherwise the goaltenders stole the show. The Gulls had a bunch of chances late in the second and throughout the third, but Jaeger was equal to the task.
Feb. 19 vs. Bakersfield: Sylvain Deschatelets had four assists, Mark Pederson earned three helpers, while four others has two points, en route to San Diego's 7-3 thumping of the Condors. The Gulls jumped out to a 3-0 first-period lead before Bakersfield dented the scoreboard. It was a 4-3 game in the third period, but the Blue and Orange erupted for three more goals and cruised from there.
PLAYER NOTES: Deschatelets' four assists Saturday is a team high this season... Curtis Brown has six points (2g, 4a) in his last four games... The Gulls have six players that have scored 10-or-more goals (Brian Gornick, Sean O'Connor, Max Birbraer, Deschatelets, Guillaume Fournier and Pederson)... Scott Borders was activated from the injured list Friday... Mike Garrow (concussion), Evgueni Nourislamov (broken thumb) and Wes Rypien (knee sprain) all remain on the injured list... Andrew Canzanello remains with the American Hockey League's Cincinnati Mighty Ducks...
TEAM NOTES: The Gulls are 17-5-3 at home and 9-13-3 on the road this season... They've outscored their opponents 97-71 at home, but have been outscored 77-55 on the road... San Diego has been shutout four times this season (all on the road)... The Gulls are 5-7-2 in their last 14 games... They are 20-2-1 when scoring four-plus goals in a game, but just 6-16-5 when scoring three or less... San Diego has been out-shot in 27 of 50 games this season...
UPCOMING GAMES: The Gulls now embark on a three-game road trip, which starts Tuesday in Victoria against the Salmon Kings. San Diego will take on the Salmon Kings both Tuesday and Wednesday before concluding the trip Saturday, Feb. 26 in Bakersfield. The Blue and Orange return home Sunday, Feb. 27 against the Idaho Steelheads. All three games on the road trip start at 7 p.m. The Sunday home game begins at 5:05 pm.
