Gulls Fall To Fresno, 4-3
February 17, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release
FRESNO, Calif. -- The San Diego Gulls experienced their own version of "D-Day" Monday afternoon, which ironically was also President's Day. That's because all four goals they allowed came via Fresno Falcon defensemen.
Fresno's blue-liners netted three in the first and one in the second to defeat San Diego, 4-3, before 4,250 at Selland Arena. The Gulls (31-16-3) stay two points ahead of the Bakersfield Condors for second place in the West Coast Hockey League. The Falcons remain in fourth place, but creep to within six points of the Blue and Orange.
Fresno (27-17-5) jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to goals by defensemen Kirk DeWaele and Cory Murphy. DeWaele got things started with his sixth goal just 88 seconds into the game, firing a shot from the blue line that pin-balled past Cris Classen. Murphy potted his 12th at 11:31, roofing a shot over Classen's glove.
San Diego cut the lead in half, before another Fresno defenseman regained the two-goal cushion. Dean Tiltgen connected with linemates Mark Pederson and Clayton Read for his first of the day at 15:11. But two minutes later, Jason McBain netted his third from the right circle to give the Falcons a 3-1 advantage.
Yet another Falcons D-man scored 5:29 into the second period to give them a commanding three-goal lead. Scott Borders, at the side of the net, fed the slot to Drew Schoneck, who one-timed home his sixth of the year.
Tiltgen and Kevin Grant scored 50 seconds apart in the third period, cutting Fresno's lead to 4-3. Tiltgen got his second of the game - 22nd of the season - at 7:59, beating Terry Friesen high stick-side. Grant followed with his fifth at 8:49, taking a pass from Cory Cyrenne and gunning in a shot from the right circle. But that's as close as the Gulls could get however as Friesen shut the door from there.
Notes: San Diego is 3-6-0 against Fresno this season, including 1-4-0 at Selland Arena... The Gulls are .500 or better against every other team in the WCHL... With an assist on Grant's goal, Sylvain Deschatelets extended his point streak to six games... Pederson has 13 points in his last five games (8g, 5a), including two hat tricks... Trevor Koenig remains out of the lineup with a knee sprain... Samy Nasreddine is still out with a back injury... Dennis Purdie remains on injured reserve with a shoulder injury... Mike Garrow returned from the American Hockey League's Utah Grizzlies... Marc Busenburg and Rob Voltera remain with the AHL's Hershey Bears...
San Diego continues its busy schedule Wednesday in Long Beach, with game time set at 7 p.m. The Gulls go back to Fresno Friday before returning home Saturday and Sunday to take on the Falcons and Condors respectively. All games can be heard live on 1130AM-KSDO with Chris Ello calling the play-by-play. The Gulls' Internet radio show broadcasts live every Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on wsradio.com with Tera Black and Jeremy Zager hosting.
