Bakersfield Condors News Release
Bakersfield, Calif. â Dennis Purdie scored two goals â once shorthanded and once the power play, as the San Diego Gulls defeated the Bakersfield Condors 3-2 in front of 4,665 fans at Centennial Garden on Friday night.
San Diego held the Condors to just four shots in the opening frame, and staked themselves to a 2-0 lead 11:02 in. Kevin Grant blasted home his first goal of the season on a two-man advantage to take a 1-0 advantage before Bakersfield had their first shot. Less than four minutes later, while the Condors were on the power play, Purdie scored on a breakaway to make it 2-0.
In the second, San Diego scored again on the power play to extend the lead to 3-0. Purdie notched his second of the game in a goalmouth scramble. It came on a five-minute power play that was issued when Paul Rosebush was ejected for an elbowing major. The Condors bounced back with a power play goal of their own by Jimmy Drolet at 16:28 to make it 3-1.
The Condors pelted the Gulls net with 11 shots and broke through again, when Kevin Riehl deflected home a wrister from Randy Perry with 4:38 remaining to pull within a goal. But any hopes of a last-minute comeback by the Condors was dashed when they were whistled for a roughing penalty with just 1:30 left in regulation. Bakersfield slumped to 4-7-1 with the loss, and San Diego pulled even with them in the Pacific Division standings, improving to 4-4-1 on the season.
In other Pacific Division action, Las Vegas lost in Atlantic City 3-2 in a shootout tonight, but maintain the top spot in the division. Alaska won 4-1 in Idaho tonight to move into second place, and Long Beach also defeated the Fresno Falcons 5-1.
The Condors head out on the road on Sunday when they take on the Falcons at 5:00pm. They return home to host Long Beach on Wednesday, November 19 for Student ID Night at 7:00pm, sponsored by WB 12, KISS 96.5 and Golden Empire Transit. All Condors games can be heard live on KGEO AM 1230, and online at www.bakersfieldcondors.com.
