San Diego Gulls News Release

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Mike Ouellet scored in the sixth round of a shootout to lift the Long Beach Ice Dogs over the San Diego Gulls 1-0 Saturday night, before 3,115 at the Long Beach Arena.

With the win, Long Beach (5-6-1) moves one point ahead of San Diego (4-4-2) for fifth place in the Pacific Division.

Offense was pretty much nonexistent through the first three periods and the five-minute overtime session. Teams even struggled scoring in the shootout.

It took six rounds before the Ice Dogs sealed the two points. Oullett was the only one to light the lamp, beating Trevor Koenig with a slick backhander.

Colin Zulianello stopped Mark Pederson, Sylvain Deschatelets, Igor Pohanka, Greg Barber, Clayton Read and Miguel Delisle in the shootout. The Long Beach netminder stopped all 29 shots in regulation and overtime to up his record to 3-2-1. It was Zulianello's first shutout of the season and fourth of his career. Trevor Koenig, whose record falls to 4-1-2, turned aside 27 shots.

Both teams had a handful of quality chances in regulation, but nothing to write home about. It was the second time the Gulls were shutout this season. The last time they lost 1-0 was April 5, 2000 in Fresno.

Notes: The Gulls were outscored 14-4 on their four-game road trip. They finished the trek with a 1-2-1 record... San Diego has not scored an even strength goal since its win over Florida on Nov. 7 (335:08)... Dennis Purdie still needs three more points for 500 in his pro career... Steve Martinson still needs 11 more wins for 400 all-time in his coaching career. He's been the only coach in Gulls franchise history... Trent Clark was signed in time for Saturday's game... Leading scorer Billy Tibbetts was placed on the 7-day injured list with a fractured wrist. He's expected to be out for at least another two weeks...

San Diego returns home Wednesday to face the Fresno Falcons in a rematch of last season's Taylor Cup Finals. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will be the first "College Night." Students who present a valid college ID will receive $7 terrace tickets, $2 drink specials and $2 hot dogs. All games can be heard live on KPOP 1360 AM with Chris Ello calling the play-by-play. The Gulls Internet radio show, hosted by Tera Black and Jeremy Zager on wsradio.com, will begin airing biweekly soon. Stay tuned for more details...
