Mississippi Sea Wolves News Release

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. – South Carolina's Chris Allen scored two goals against his former team and Jim Lorentz notched a goal in the shootout to end the game, as the Stingrays upended the Mississippi Sea Wolves, 5-4 in the shootout, before 7,111 at the North Charleston Coliseum.

"Anytime you can get a point on the road it's valuable," said Sea Wolves coach Bob Woods. "It was the type of game we expected, very physical, back and forth, lots of action. We battled hard and I'm satisfied with a point tonight."

South Carolina (6-6-0) opened the score just 58 seconds into the game. Stingrays' Dave Seitz dropped the puck to Trevor Johnson, who unleashed a hard wrist shot under the cross bar, beating Greg Gardner, for his third of the year.

Mississippi (6-3-4) answered in the final minute of the first period, on a 5-on-3 power play. Louis Dumont cashed in at the side with just 14 seconds left in the period, taking a pass from Steffon Walby. The point for Dumont was his 682nd ECHL point, moving him just three points from tying Darryl Noren for second all-time in league history and six points from tying Rod Taylor's all-time mark of 688 points.

The Sea Wolves made another 5-on-3 man advantage count early in the second. Walby passed in front to Jim Baxter and he cashed with his fourth goal in as many games at the 34 second mark.

The Stingrays bounced back at 11:46. Former Mississippi defenseman Chris Allen skated in on a rush and fired a slap shot from the high slot, handcuffing Gardner on the blocker side, tallying his second of the campaign.

Marty Clapton gave South Carolina its lead back again, after he unloaded a one-timer from the right circle at 15:23. The shot went five-hole on Gardner. The goal was Clapton's team-leading fifth and the Stingrays held a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes.

In the third, Mississippi tied it back up again on the power play. Roger Maxwell re-directed a point shot from Kerry Ellis-Toddington, for his fourth of the season

South Carolina got back momentum, as Allen wired home his second of the night, letting go with a slapshot from the slot at 12:30.

But with just over five minutes left in regulation, Stingrays' Kirk Daubenspeck got caught wandering behind his net and Jeff Hutchins spotted Brent Gauvreau, who slid it into the empty cage and tie the score at 4-4.

In the shootout, Louis Dumont scored for Mississippi. Ed Courtney replied for South Carolina and Lorentz beat Gardner on the blocker side to end the game.

Mississippi was successful on 3-of-7 chances with the man advantage, while South Carolina went 1-for-10 on the power play. The Stingrays out shot the Sea Wolves, 29-28.
