Alaska Aces News Release

BOISE, Idaho – Jan Kopecky scored twice as a busy week finally took its toll on Alaska as the Aces fell 6-1 to the Idaho Steelheads before 4,634 Saturday at the Bank of America Centre.

Aided by a couple of Alaska penalties, Idaho (8-6) came out flying in the first period, taking 13 of the game's first 14 shots on goal and scoring a pair on the power play, the first of which coming in a five-on-three situation at 3:27. Darrell Hay, fresh off the IR, beat a screened Aces starter Lance Mayes top shelf. Mayes had no chance on the second goal, either, as Jan Kopecky fired home a one-timer after a perfect feed from Wade Davis at 10:11.

Momentum began to shift when Mike Lee, the league leader in major penalties with 10, knocked down Idaho's Andrew Proskurnicki with one punch at center ice. Shortly thereafter, the Steelheads took a foolish roughing penalty and Dave Csumrik converted the ensuing power play at 14:45 with a wrist shot from the point that brought Alaska to within 2-1 after the opening 20 minutes.

Idaho regained control of the game early in the middle frame, scoring twice within a 57-second span, including Kopecky's second of the night and Scott Burt's second of the year. An Alaska turnover created a wide-open opportunity in the slot for Zenon Konopka, who blasted the puck past Mayes at 6:59, and suddenly the Steelheads enjoyed a 5-1 bulge, which they maintained for the remainder of the period. Derek Paget completed the scoring with his third goal of the year 2:24 into the final period.

The Aces (8-5) and Steelheads, once again tied for second place in the Pacific Division, will regroup and collide for three more games next week in Anchorage, beginning Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. and continuing Friday and Saturday. All Alaska Aces games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.alaskaaces.com, with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
