Gulls back on the winning track
November 29, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO ââ Before the weekend, the San Diego Gulls were in unfamiliar territory... below .500. They were also in the midst of a four-game winless streak. But thanks to a couple of wins over the weekend, the Blue and Orange snapped the skid and regained a winning record, not to mention found their offensive touch.
During their four-game winless streak, the Gulls scored only five goals. They gave the goal judges a lot more work Saturday and Sunday, as they lit the lamp 10 times. Saturday, the Gulls demolished the Fresno Falcons 6-1 and came back the next night to knock off the first place Bakersfield Condors 4-3 in a shootout.
WEEK IN REVIEW:
Nov. 27 vs. Fresno:
Mathieu Chouinard, playing his first game since injuring his hip on Nov. 3, stopped 25 of 26 shots and set the tone as his Gulls thrashed Fresno 6-1. Chouinard stopped three clear-cut breakaways in the first period, keeping the game scoreless heading into the second. That's when San Diego erupted for four goals after Jason Weaver gave the Falcons a 1-0 lead. The Gulls added two more in the third and cruised from there.
Nov. 28 vs. Bakersfield:
San Diego out-shot Bakersfield 46-20, but had to come-from behind to force a shootout. The Condors were spotted a 2-0 lead, but the Gulls cut it to one heading into the third period. Bakersfield made it 3-1 early in the third, but the Gulls stormed back and tied the game at the 12:20 mark. San Diego then trailed in the final round of the shootout, but Max Birbraer knotted things again and Chris Lynch finally won it in the sixth round.
PLAYER NOTES:
Guillaume Fournier has five points (2g, 3a) in his last three games... Sylvain Deschatelets has four points (2g, 2a) in three games since returning from the injured list... Evgueni Nourislamov has five points (2g, 3a) in his last two games... Curtis Brown scored his first point as a Gull Saturday against Fresno... Chouinard and Brian Gornick were activated from injured reserve on Saturday... Sean Murphy (wrist) and Scott Borders (back) were placed on the seven-day injured list Saturday... Sean O'Connor remains with the American Hockey League's Cincinnati Mighty Ducks...
TEAM NOTES:
San Diego is 5-0-1 at home and 1-5-1 on the road... The Gulls ended their four-game winless streak Saturday... They've outscored their opponents 32-13 during their six wins and have been outscored 23-8 during their seven losses (which includes an overtime and shootout loss)... San Diego was 7-4-2 through 13 games last season... The Blue and Orange play their next seven games at home...
The Gulls continue their long homestand with three games next weekend against the defending Kelly Cup Champion Idaho Steelheads. Friday's game starts at 7:05 p.m. and beanie hats will be given to the first 5,000 fans in attendance. At Saturday's game, which also begins at 7:05 p.m., the first 6,000 fans will get a Gulls baseball cap.
