Grrrowl announce 2005-06 schedule

June 20, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Greenville Grrrowl News Release

GREENVILLE, SC - The Greenville Grrrowl has released its schedule for the upcoming 2005-06 ECHL season. Highlighting the 72-game schedule is an October 22nd home opener against Charlotte, a rematch against last year's American Conference Semifinal opponent Florida, and a visit from the Kelly Cup Champion Trenton Titans.

The Grrrowl will compete against more northern teams than in years past, with Wheeling, Toledo, Johnstown, Trenton and Reading on the schedule in 2005-06. Greenville will not face any western teams, including the three newest additions to the ECHL: the Phoenix Roadrunners, the Utah Grizzlies, and the Stockton Thunder.

Greenville's home schedule is stacked towards the beginning of the season, with 18 of the first 28 Grrrowl games being played at the BI-LO Center. Greenville hits the road for a pair of six-game road trips in the second half of the season, and will play a total of 15 games in March. Special events already on the schedule include "Education Day" against Columbia on November 15th (special 10:35 a.m. start), and a 6:05 p.m. game on Martin Luther King Day against the Pensacola Ice Pilots.

Greenville opens its eighth ECHL season in Columbia, SC on October 21st against the defending Eastern Division Champion Inferno. The Grrrowl return to the BI-LO Center for the home opener on October 22nd against the Charlotte Checkers.

Greenville will host Pensacola on October 28th, a team the Grrrowl upset in the first round of the Kelly Cup Playoffs last season. Greenville will look for revenge against the Florida Everblades in home games on November 22nd and 26th. Florida ended Greenville's playoff run last season with a 2-1 overtime win on April 26th in game three of the American Conference Semifinals.

The defending Kelly Cup Champion Trenton Titans will hit the BI-LO Center ice on December 10th. Greenville defeated Trenton in a shootout last season in the only meeting between the teams.

Greenville will play South Carolina, Charlotte and Columbia 10 times each, and will battle Augusta nine times during the regular season. Other Grrrowl opponents include Gwinnett (7 games), Pensacola (6), Mississippi (5), Florida (4), Trenton (3), Texas (2), Toledo (2), Wheeling (2), Johnstown (1) and Reading (1).

The Grrrowl will play 13 homes games on Saturdays, 10 on Tuesdays and Fridays, two on Sundays, and will host one game on a Monday.

The ECHL will have 27 teams in 16 states and British Columbia playing 972 games in 2005-06. The season will open October 21st and end April 8th with each team playing 36 home games and 36 road games. The division and conference alignments and the format for the 2006 Kelly Cup Playoffs will be announced following the Annual Board of Governors Meeting on June 21-22.
