Gulls announce 2005-06 schedule

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Gulls have announced their 72-game regular season schedule for 2005-06, which begins Friday, Oct. 21 in Alaska. San Diego, which enters its third season in the ECHL, plays its first seven games on the road before its Home Opener Saturday, Nov. 5 against the Stockton Thunder.
This will mark the third straight season that the Gulls will open the regular season on the road. Their first three games will be in Alaska against the reigning Pacific Division Champion Aces, who made it all the way to the National Conference finals in last season's Kelly Cup Playoffs.
Playing on the road is something San Diego will be used to the first half of the season, as 19 of its first 30 games will be away from home ice. The Gulls' longest road trip of the year (and in franchise history) is in December when they'll embark on a 10-game trek.
The Gulls will be spending most of the second half of the season at home, playing 15 of their final 26 games at the ipayOne Center at the Sports Arena. After their 10-game road trip, San Diego's longest stint away from home will be four games. The Gulls will have four homestands of four-or-more games, including a season-long eight-game homestand Nov. 23 through Dec. 9.
New to the ECHL in 2005-06 are the Phoenix Roadrunners, Stockton Thunder and Utah Grizzlies. San Diego's first game against the Roadrunners is Friday, Oct. 28 in Phoenix. The Roadrunners will make their first-ever visit to San Diego Friday, Dec. 9. The Gulls will host the Thunder (formerly the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies) for the Home Opener on Nov. 5 and will make their first appearance in Stockton on Tuesday, Feb. 28. The Gulls and Grizzlies meet for the first time in Utah Saturday, Dec. 10 and in San Diego Saturday, Jan. 7.
Other teams to make their inaugural San Diego visits are the Dayton Bombers (March 8), Johnstown Chiefs (Dec. 3 and Dec. 4) and Mississippi Sea Wolves (Nov. 16 and Nov. 18). The Gulls will also make their second-ever trips to Pensacola (Dec. 16 and Dec. 20) and Texas (Dec. 17 and Dec. 18) in 2005-06.
The division and conference alignments as well as the format for the 2006 Kelly Cup Playoffs will be announced following the Annual Board of Governors Meeting, which takes place Tuesday and Wednesday in Las Vegas.
