Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The Alaska Aces begin defense of their 2005 West Division championship Friday, October 21, when the San Diego Gulls pay a visit to Sullivan Arena for the opener of a three-game series.
With 11 teams now located beyond the Central time zone, only two clubs will make repeat appearances at Sullivan Arena in 2005-06. The Utah Grizzlies, now based in the ECHL after several years in the International Hockey League and the American Hockey League, make their debut in Anchorage November 29-30 and return for a three-game set March 1-4. The Victoria Salmon Kings close out the calendar year 2005 during a three-game series December 28-31 and also will round out the home schedule March 31 and April 1.
Among Alaska's 36 home games are 27 scheduled for the weekend, including three Saturday afternoon tilts (tentatively set for 2:05 p.m. starts) and five Sunday matinee games, featuring the ever-popular post-game "Skate with the Aces," sponsored by KeyBank. Aces fans will get their first look at the Stockton Thunder in a three-game series set for January 18-21 and the Phoenix Roadrunners February 10-12.
In addition, Alaska will welcome the Augusta Lynx to Sullivan Arena for the first time ever January 28-29. The Lynx are based in Augusta, Georgia, home of the prestigious Masters golf tournament each April. The Aces play one game each on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, with six games slated for Wednesday night. At this point, all night games will begin at 7:15 p.m. while Sunday afternoon contests will start at 5:05 p.m. However, the club has asked its fans to stay informed of possible changes with respect to starting times by periodically logging onto www.alaskaaces.com throughout the summer.
Alaska plays nine of its 10 West rivals three times each on the road, with five games scheduled at Victoria. The remaining four road contests will be played at Texas (twice), Mississippi, and Pensacola during a week-long trip in early November. The Aces went 1-1-1 at Sullivan Arena last year against the Mississippi Sea Wolves, but have never played the Wildcatters or the Ice Pilots, who won the Brabham Cup with the ECHL's best regular season record a year ago before being upset in the first round of the 2005 Kelly Cup playoffs by Greenville.
The division and conference alignments and the format for the 2006 Kelly Cup Playoffs will be announced following the Annual Board of Governors Meeting on June 21-22 in Las Vegas. The Alaska Aces enjoyed their best season in 10 years as a professional team in 2004-05, finishing with a club-record 98 points during the regular season and winning two playoff series for the first time ever.
