Reading's Fifth Anniversary Features Several
June 20, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Reading Royals News Release
Reading, PA - The ECHL, in cooperation with member clubs, released the 2005-06 schedule today. This is the Royals most-balanced schedule since joining the ECHL in October of 2001. The Royals will play 17 of their first 36 games at home in the Sovereign Center. Reading's 5th Anniversary Season features 28 of 36 home contests schedule on weekend dates (Friday, Saturday and Sunday). All eight remaining home dates will be on Tuesdays in the Jungle.
For the fourth time in five seasons, Reading will open the season on the road. For the first time in club history, the Royals will tangle with ex-Royals tough guy Dave Stewart and the Johnstown Chiefs to open the season in the battle of Pennsylvania for the Keystone Cup. Since 2001-02, each club has won the Keystone Cup twice. The reigning North Division regular-season champs will open the season at home against Kelly Cup Champion Trenton on October 29, marking the third time in five season this has occurred.
The Royals will begin the season with five of their first six games on the road before entering a season-high, six-game homestand on November 11. During that six-game stretch, Reading will host Dayton three-straight times along with Trenton, Toledo and South Carolina. Reading's battle with South Carolina marks the fifth straight season these two non-conference clubs have met and the second straight season Reading and South Carolina have played on November 19 in the Sovereign Center.
For the first time in Royals history, Reading will travel out West for an extended eight-game road trip that will see first-ever meetings against the expansion Stockton Thunder and the Long Beach Ice Dogs. Other firsts include: Regular-season match-ups in Greenville (November 4) and Las Vegas (January 3), plus hosting Long Beach (December 10 & 11) and Fresno (December 17 & 18) in back-to-back meetings.
Reading Coach Derek Clancey said there are some exciting aspects about this year's schedule, "This season is very balanced for us from a potential divisional standpoint. We play everyone an equal amount of times at home and on the road. Plus, we travel out West and get to meet several teams we have not seen before which should be exciting for the fans."
The Royals will play rivals Dayton, Johnstown, Trenton, Toledo and Wheeling each twelve (12) times this season with each club hosting six games. The remaining twelve (12) games on the schedule include: Stockton (3 on road), Long Beach (2 at home; 1 on road), Fresno (2 at home), Las Vegas (1 at home; 1 on road), Greenville (1 on road) and South Carolina (1 at home).
With the addition of the Phoenix Roadrunners, Utah Grizzlies and Stockton Thunder the ECHL is addressing division and conference alignments. The division and conference alignments and the format for the 2006 Kelly Cup Playoffs will be announced following the Annual Board of Governors Meeting on June 21-22.
