Greenville Grrrowl News Release

GREENVILLE, SC - Greenville Grrrowl General Manager Ryan Stewart announced today that the Grrrowl have acquired Stockton Thunder forward STEVE SLONINA. In exchange for Slonina, the Grrrowl traded the ECHL rights to defenseman MIKE KNIGHT, who is under contract with the AHL's Portland Pirates.

With 19 goals on the season, Slonina leaves Stockton as the team's leading goal scorer. The third-year pro out of Abington, MA has 19 goals and 14 assists for 33 points in 47 games. Slonina leads the Thunder in shorthanded goals with three, and is tied for the team lead with eight power play goals. He also leads the team with 184 shots on goal, scoring on over 10 percent of his shots.

The 5-11, 180-pound forward has scored 15 points while on the power play this season and has two game winning goals. Slonina scored two goals in the first ever game played in the new Stockton Arena before 10,117 fans. Slonina has four two-goal games this season, and recorded a three-point night against Toledo on Nov. 18th. The 24-year-old recorded at least a point in 11 of his first 15 games this season for the last-place Thunder and strung together a six-game point streak earlier this month.

In four years with the UMass-Lowell River Hawks, Slonina recorded 23 goals and 59 points while playing in his native state of Massachusetts. Upon graduation, Slonina suited up for two games for the Lowell Lock Monsters of the AHL.

In his first full professional season in 2003-04, Slonina played 69 games for the Gwinnett Gladiators with 37 points on 20 goals and 17 assists. He spent last season with the Toledo Storm, collecting 19 points (8 goals, 11 assists) in 51 games.

Mike Knight missed the first month of this season but has played 33 games for the Grrrowl, recording nine points (3 goals, 6 assists), 57 penalty minutes and a +12 rating. He had three points in three regular season games for the Grrrowl at the end of the 2004-05 season, and added six points in seven playoff games.

The Grrrowl are back in action Tuesday night with a 7:05 p.m. game against the Florida Everblades at the BI-LO Center. For tickets, call 864-233-2525.
