Dayton Bombers News Release
Toledo, OH- The Bombers and starting goaltender David Currie picked up their first shutout of the season over an opponent in their 1-0 road victory.
The Bombers arrived in Toledo yesterday for the first time since December 3lst, 2005. After losing to the Storm 3-2 in Dayton earlier in the week and coming off a tough 1-0 loss at home as well to the Reading Royals, the Bombers wanted to avenge both losses by snapping Toledo's five game winning streak.
As head coach Don MacAdam stated earlier in the week; "we will rotate goaltenders with all these games coming up in a short period of time", and despite how well Mike Brown played the night before, he stood to his word and David Currie would get the start vs. Toledo.
Currie was tested early and often in the first period on the shorter ice at the Toledo Sports Arena, and the Bombers were able to generate some offense as well on Storm goalie Drew McIntyre. Both goalies were outstanding and despite being out shot 16-11 by the Storm, the Bombers were in a scoreless tie after one.
Early on in the second period at the 3:52 mark, the Bombers penalty kill got their first big test of the game, after a four minute double minor was called on the Bombers Scott Cameron for high sticking. At this point in a scoreless game the four minutes seemed like an eternity, but not to the Bombers and they would kill every second of the double minor thanks in part to their number one penalty killer, David Currie.
Then almost four minutes after the double minor had been killed off at the 10:56 mark in the second, the Bombers took the lead.
The power play would have their chances throughout the first and part of the second, but this particular power play would be one of the differences in the game.
Mark Flood (9) would take a shot from the high slot with screens being set left and right in front of McIntyre and he never saw the puck until it went by him down on the ice and into the back of the net, assists to Jeff Szwez (20) and Scott Cameron (33) to give the Bombers a 1-0 lead at the end of two periods of play.
Toledo would again try their best to put the pressure on Currie, but it didn't matter as he would stop all 12 shots in the third period alone and all 38 shots in the game to pick up the shutout and the road victory for the Bombers 1-0
The Bombers continue their 15th Anniversary season at home on Tuesday night at 7:00pm, as they take on their top rival in the Northern Division, the Toledo Storm at the Ervin J. Nutter Center. Tickets are on sale at ticketmaster.com or for more information call the Bombers office at 775-4747. The game can be heard on 980 (am) Homer the Sports Animal and on line at daytonbombers.com.
