
Checkers 2-1-1 during grueling stretch

CHARLOTTE, NC - The Charlotte Checkers went 2-1-1 during a four-game homestand in six days last week. The Checkers capped off the week with a three-games-in-three-nights stretch in which they went 1-1-1. The Checkers did manage to gain more ground over South Carolina in the divisional standings with a 6-2 rout of the Stingrays on Sunday. Charlotte currently sits in fourth place of the South Division with 59 points, five points back of Greenville and nine points ahead of South Carolina.
The Checkers, whose 54 games played is tops in the league, will play just five games over the next three weeks. The Checkers take to the road against Greenville, South Carolina, Florida and Gwinnett during this stretch. Charlotte's next home game will be Friday, March 10th against Gwinnett. Charlotte's remaining schedule is in favor of them making a playoff run and improving in the divisional standings. The remainder of the Checkers schedule is against divisional opponents, including four bouts with Greenville, two against Florida and four against Gwinnett - all of which are ahead of the Checkers in the South Division.

Tuesday, February 14, 2006 vs. Pensacola, W, 6-4 The Charlotte Checkers scored on four power play goals en route to a 6-4 victory over the Pensacola Ice Pilots Tuesday in front of 3,590 fans at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena. Kenton Smith notched a goal and two assists to lead the Checkers and earn the First Star of the game.
Six Checkers found the net as Charlotte fired 42 shots on goal while holding Pensacola to just 25. Charlotte had goals from Rory Rawlyk, Dusty Jamieson, Smith, Ryan Fultz, Brandon Cullen and Neil Petruic. Rawlyk, Cullen and Jamieson also notched an assist each.
Friday, February 17, 2006 vs. Greenville, L-OT, 2-3 The Greenville Grrrowl defeated the Charlotte Checkers 3-2 in a shootout Friday night in front of 5,997 fans at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena. The Checkers tied the game with two goals in the third period, but were outscored in the shoot out 1-0.
Greenville's Brock Radunske scored both goals for the Grrrowl notching an even strength goal in the first period and a power play goal in the second. The Checkers were held scoreless until the 9:16 mark of the third period when Ryan Fultz punched in a rebound during a two-man advantage.
The Checkers scored again at the 19:25 mark after pulling goalie Jeff Glass to have the one-man advantage. Brandon Cullen scored from the right wing to knot the game at 2-2.
Saturday, February 18, 2006 vs. Pensacola, L, 3-4 The Charlotte Checkers set a new franchise record for the second time this season as 10,945 fans filled St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena Saturday night. The Checkers rallied late but came up on the short side of a 4-3 score against the Pensacola Ice Pilots.
Charlotte took the lead into the first intermission on goals by Brandon Cullen and Juris Stals, but two goals by Pensacola gave the Ice Pilots a one goal advantage going into the third period. Pensacola added another goal at the 17:09 mark of the third as Adam Courchaine scored the eventual game winner.
Sunday, February 19, 2006 vs. South Carolina, W, 6-2 The Charlotte Checkers scored the first three goals of the game en route to a 6-2 victory over the South Carolina Stingrays Sunday in front of 4,852 fans at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena.
The Checkers hot start was led by Mike Bayrack who scored the first two goals of the game at the 1:37 mark and 17:54 mark of the first period, respectively. Brandon Cullen added a goal at the 18:31 mark which proved to be the game winner.
