
Ziedins, Latvia Downed By Russia

Torino, ITALY - Stockton Thunder forward Maris Ziedins went scoreless as Latvia suffered a 9-2 defeat to Russia in the preliminary round of the 2006 Winter Olympic hockey tournament, at Torino Esposizioni on Sunday.
Ziedins, coming off Saturday's loss to Sweden which included his first career Olympic goal, posted one shot on goal. Falling behind 2-0 in the first period, Latvia got back into the game with a shorthanded goal from former ECHL'er Aigars Cipruss 9:55 into the first.
Russia countered with seven unanswered goals, including six over the final two periods. Latvia's Mikelis Redlihs finished the scoring with a goal at the 18:40 mark.
Russia's Ilya Kovalchuk (Atlanta Thrashers) enjoyed a breakout game, highlighted a four-goal effort. Russia received additional offensive support with three-point performances from Pavel Datsyuk (Detroit Red Wings), Viktor Kozlov (New Jersey Devils), and Alexei Yashin (New York Islanders).
Latvia (0-3-1 tournament record) moves onto face Kazakhstan in its final preliminary-round matchup on Tuesday at 2:30 a.m. PT. The game will be televised as part of a cable package on MSNBC (2:30 - 10 a.m. PT) and NBC Universal HD (2:30 a.m. - 1:30 a.m. PT).
