Utah Grizzlies News Release
Stockton, California- The Stockton Thunder needed an overtime period to defeat the Utah Grizzlies 4-3 and end their home winless streak of 12 games.
The Thunder took a 1-0 lead at 9:12 of the first period, when Aaron MacInnis converted the first power play of the game for his second goal of the season, assisted by Joel Irwin and Kevin Gardner. But Jeff Miles of the Grizzlies put up the equalizer at 17:26, with assists going to Ed Hill and Brad Herauf, and the teams entered the first intermission tied at one goal apiece.
Joel Irwin added to his point totals for the night with a goal less than five minutes into the second frame; Maris Ziedins and Jason Metcalfe picked up helpers on that goal. The Grizzlies came storming back, again on the powerplay, when Garett Cameron and Ed Hill connected with Ryan Kinasewich for his 21st goal of the year, at the 13:21 mark.
Utah took their first lead of the game early in the third, as Miles picked up his second of the night, a power-play goal, assisted by Kinasewich and Herauf, to make it 3-2 Grizzlies. But with just over a minute to play, and the extra attacker, Irwin scored his second goal of the night on the rebound to tie the game and force overtime.
Overtime saw chances on both sides, but no score until Maris Ziedins found the back of the net with 5 seconds left on the clock to give Stockton the victory. Alfie Michaud, playing in net for Utah in the first game since New Year's Day, made 31 saves for the loss, and Jake Moreland stopped 29 of 32 shots for Stockton in the victory.
Jeff Miles (two goals), Ryan Kinasewich (one goal, one assist), Brad Herauf (two assists), and Ed Hill (two assits), all had multi-point nights for Utah. The Grizzlies (22-18-4) are back at the E-Center to begin a seven-game homestand on Friday at 7:05 p.m.
