Gorillas place eighth in CHL Coaches Poll
November 3, 2006 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Amarillo Gorillas News Release
AMARILLO, TX - The Amarillo Gorillas of the Central Hockey League (CHL) have placed 8th in the inaugural CHL Coaches Poll as they garnered 56 total points in a poll submitted by all 17 Central Hockey League coaches. The Youngstown Steelhounds have earned this week's top spot after starting the season with an impressive 4-0-1 mark. Youngstown garnered 8 first place votes while 2nd ranked Oklahoma City received 5 and 3rd place Arizona tallied 3. The Wichita Thunder and Colorado Eagles round out the top five. The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees and Memphis Riverkings with 3-1 and 2-1-2 records respectively are the only other teams atop the Gorillas in this week's poll.
The Gorillas will look to dethrone the current top dog as they welcome the Youngstown Steelhounds to the Amarillo Civic Center Saturday evening for a 7 P.M. start time. The Gorillas are 2-1 all-time vs. Youngstown and this will be the first of just 2 total meetings between the two clubs this season. Saturday night will be U.S. American Pride Jersey Night presented by KVII Pro News 7 and the Gorillas will take to the ice in their American Pride jerseys which will then be auctioned off after the game.
But before Youngstown comes to town the Gorillas will be tested tonight by the 2-2 Corpus Christi Rayz. Corpus did not crack the top 10 CHL Coach's Poll this week. The Rayz are coming off a quality 5-3 victory Tuesday evening when they knocked off the Laredo Bucks thanks to 3 points from Justin Quenneville and 4 from Derrick McIver. Doors open at 6 P.M. this evening and the opening face off will follow shortly after 7.
The Gorillas enter weekend action with a 2-1-1 record and with 5 points are currently 2nd in the highly contested Southwest Division. Amarillo is home for a pair of games this weekend before playing their next 3 contests all on the road.
