Jeff Christian Suspended for Three Games
November 3, 2006 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Youngstown SteelHounds News Release
YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO - The Central Hockey League (CHL) announced today that Youngstown SteelHounds forward Jeff Christian has been suspended three (3) games for his actions in the Hounds 5-4 overtime loss on Wednesday, November 1st versus the New Mexico Scorpions.
Christian will miss tonight's game versus the Scorpions, Saturday's game at Amarillo and next Friday's game at Arizona. The second-year Hound has 10 points on the season including four goals. Last year, Christian finished second in the CHL with 107 points (55-52=107) and was a First Team All-CHL performer.
In a statement from the CHL Vice President of Operations Duane Lewis, it was determined that Christian made forceful contact with the head of his opponent with an elbow. All players have been well informed that blows to the head will be dealt with severely and any future similar incidents will be dealt with in a more severe manner.
The SteelHounds Captain was given a five minute major penalty for elbowing and an accompanying game misconduct at the 7:13 mark of the third period of Wednesday's game. The actions by Christian were in retaliation of New Mexico defenseman Vladimir Hartinger who had left his feet to deliver a check to SteelHounds defenseman Paul Esdale who was defenseless at the time. Hartinger received a four-game suspension from the CHL which begins tonight versus Youngstown. New Mexico forward Craig MacDonald left the bench during the altercation and has subsequently been suspended for two games beginning with tonight's contest.
Due to the suspensions, the SteelHounds will be shorthanded as they will be permitted to dress just 17 skaters as will the Scorpions who can dress just 16 players.
Tonight's game versus the Scorpions can be heard on ESPN Radio, 1240- The Fan or via the Hounds live webcast at www.steelhounds.com. Face-off is scheduled for 9:35 PM (EST).
