November 3, 2006 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Corpus Christi IceRays News Release
Rich Hansen scored both Amarillo Gorillas goals Friday night, as the Gorillas hung on to beat the Corpus Christi Rayz 2-1 in a goaltending duel. Ron Vogel and Jamie Vadepyker traded brilliant saves throughout the night. The loss for the Rayz snapped a two-game winning streak, and dropped their record to 2-3 on the season. The Rayz will now travel to Austin to take on the Ice Bats on Saturday Night before returning to the American Bank Center on Sunday afternoon at 3:05pm on Caller-Times Family Day to host the Odessa Jackalopes. For ticket information, call the Rayz at (361) 814-PUCK.
The teams traded chances in the first period, but Amarillo's Rich Hansen got the lone goal of the first period at 9:28. Hansen's league-leading seventh goal of the season was assisted by Bill Vandermeer and Brett Draney.
The Rayz answered when Kevin Watters scored a power play goal at 4:52 of the second period. Justin Quenneville found Watters with a drop pass at the top of the left circle, and Watters teed up a slapshot and beat Jamie Vandespyker to ties the score. Quenneville's assist on Watters second goal of the year improved his point streak to five games from the start of the season.
The Gorillas recaptured the lead on a power play 12:09 into the third. Draney took a shot from the slot that slipped through Vogel and rested in the crease. Hansen jumped on the loose puck and slammed it home to give Amarillo the 2-1 lead. Down the stretch, the Rayz had chances, but were unable to beat Vandespyker and the Gorillas held on for the victory.
Ron Vogel made 37 saves and was outstanding in defeat, as his record fell to 2-2. Vandespyker also was terrific in net making 34 saves for the win and upping his record to 2-1. The Rayz went 1-8 on the power play. The Gorillas went 1-6. Corpus Christi was outshot for the second straight game 39-35. Rayz forward Ryan Carter had his four-game goal scoring streak snapped. Hansen has now scored five of the last Amarillo goals in the last two games.
The Corpus Christi Rayz will cap off their three-game road trip Saturday night versus the Austin Ice Bats, and then return home on Sunday afternoon to host the Odessa Jackalopes at 3:05pm on Caller-Times Family Day. Children 12 and under will be admitted free (limit two) with the purchase of a regular priced, adult ticket. Following the game there will be a free post-game skating session at the American Bank Center with the Rayz players. Bring your skates to the game or rent them at the arena. Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster locations and start at just $10. For more information, please call the Rayz at (361) 814-PUCK.
