Rage Comeback Falls Short in 3-2 Loss

November 3, 2006 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Rocky Mountain Rage News Release

Wichita, Kan. - Anders Strome pulled the Rocky Mountain Rage within a goal mid-way through the third period with his team-leading fifth goal of the season, but the Rage never found the equalizer as they fell to the Wichita Thunder on Friday at the Kansas Coliseum, 3-2.

Despite out-shooting the Thunder, 15-12, through the first period, the Rage found themselves trailing, 2-0, after 20 minutes of play. Rage goaltender David Guererra made an initial glove save off a blast from the right circle by Wichita's Travis Clayton, but off an ensuing mad scramble in the goal mouth, Jason Duda was credited with giving the Thunder a 1-0 lead at 5:55. Late in the first, Wichita was awarded a five-on-three power play for a full two minutes. With only 12 seconds remaining on the two-man advantage, Kris Wiebe one-timed a shot past Guererra from the left circle at 19:17 to extend the Thunder lead heading to the middle frame.

Mark Wires helped the Rage cut into the lead at 7:55 of the second period when he re-directed a John Ronan effort from just inside the blue line. But Wichita quickly re-established its two-goal advantage at 10:22 with another power play goal as Duda knocked in a rebound, and the Rage entered the third trailing, 3-1.

Strome's effort to pull the Rage within one came after he slammed on the breaks behind the net and went back short-side to jam the puck past Thunder netminder Sebastien Laplante at 9:11. In the waning moments of regulation the Rage were able to pull Guererra in favor of an extra attacker but were unable to tie the game at three.

The Rage had the edge in shots on goal, 31-28, as they out-shot an opponent for the first time this season. Forward John Ronan had an assist on each of the team's goals to record the Rage's only multi-point performance.

Rocky Mountain now stands at 1-2-1 with three points and in fourth place in the Central Hockey League's Northwest Division.

The Rage complete a stretch of six straight road games to begin their inaugural season tomorrow and Sunday when they travel to face the Oklahoma City Blazers and Memphis RiverKings, respectively. They then return home for their first-ever game at the brand new, state-of-the-art Broomfield Event Center on Friday, Nov. 10, against the Tulsa Oilers at 7:05 p.m.
