Bucks Beat Bats 6-5 in Sudden Death, Rookie Chaumont Gets Game Winner

AUSTIN, Texas - The defending CHL President's Cup Champion Laredo Bucks beat the Austin Ice Bats 6-5 in sudden death overtime on Friday night in Austin at the Chaparral Ice Center. Rookie forward Bobby Chaumont scored a pair of goals, including the overtime winner, as the Bucks moved into a first place tie atop the Southeast Division at 3-3-0 with six points. The Bucks return home on Saturday night against the Odessa Jackalopes. Face off set for 7:30 p.m. The first 2,000 fans get a stress puck courtesy of TAMIU. Austin scored first as forward Mike Possin got loose on a breakaway and lifted a backhander into the net at 3:42. The Bucks tied it at one goal apiece on a power play as forward Ladislav Kouba cut down the left wing and fired home a wrist shot top shelf at 13:24. It was his third goal of the season. Late in the period Austin retook the lead as forward Henry Kuster stuffed in a rebound as 16:47.

The Bucks tied the game at 2-2 in the second period as Chaumont registered his first pro goal at 4:54 on a goal mouth scramble. Less than a minute later forward Serge Dube scored on a wrist shot from just inside the right circle on a power play chance to make it 3-2 Laredo at 5:49. It was the fourth of the season for Dube. Later in the period Austin tied it at 3-3 when Kuster registered his second of the night at 9:41.

Early in the third period the Ice Bats took the lead 4-3 as forward Mike Tucciarone swatted the puck into the cage on a goal mouth scramble. The Bucks once again came back to tie it. Forward Chris Korchinski ducked down the left wing, cut in front and wrapped the puck around the Austin goalie at 9:17 to even things at four goals apiece on a power play chance. It was his first pro goal. Austin and Kuster responded as he registered the hat trick goal with just 3:11 left to give the Ice Bats 5- 4 lead, but once again the Bucks answered. Chaumont found Philippe Seguin cutting to the slot for a wrist shot with 1:20 left to tie the game at 5- 5 and send it to overtime with his second goal of the season.

In overtime the Bucks got a power play chance and capitalized immediately. Chaumont tried to center a pass to Korchinski which deflected off Austin defenseman Terry Virtue and in for the game winner. FINAL SCORE Laredo 6, Austin 5 sudden death.

Eric Marvin stopped 28 of 33 shots to get the win and improve to 2-1-0. Miguel Beaudry allowed six goals on 30 shots and fell to 1-2-1. Laredo was 4-7 on the power play while Austin was 1-5. The Ice Bats out shot the Bucks 33-30.
