Youngstown SteelHounds News Release

Rio Rancho, New Mexico-----The Youngstown SteelHounds dropped their second straight to the New Mexico Scorpions, 3-2 on Friday night the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. After going up 2-1 in the third period, the SteelHounds let up two powerplay goals within 24 seconds of each other to take the loss.

The SteelHounds controlled the first period with very little turnovers and great forechecking. The Scorpions got more opportunities on net due to early Hounds penalties but the SteelHounds were successful in killing all four powerplay opportunities New Mexico had in the first period.

The second period saw the first goal of the game when Hounds center Chris Richards found Joey Sewell in some open space just off to the side of Scorpions goalie Walter Bartholomaus for the powerplay goal and the 1- 0 advantage. The Scorpions would tie the score at 1 at the 19:48 mark of the second period as dumped in a backhand on the powerplay for the goal and the 1-1 tie at the end of the second frame.

The Hounds took the lead in the third period on John Wheaton's first goal of the season, shoving in a rebound through the five hole to give the SteelHounds the lead at 2-1. After numerous SteelHounds penalties, the Scorpions would capitalize on the 2 man advantage scoring two goals within 24 seconds of each other. Scorpions forward, Konrad Reeder redirected a shot on net by Chris Robertson past Hounds goalie David Currie to tie the score at 2-2. Ryan McLeod would get the second goal just 24 seconds later backhanding a shot up over the right leg of Currie for the 3-2 lead.

The SteelHounds will move on to Amarillo, TX for a game against the Gorillas on Saturday night, before ending the five-game road trip with two games in Arizona to face the Sundogs.
