
Gladiators Burn Inferno in Shootout, 4-3

Jamie Milam's shootout goal for the Gladiators in the third round of the shootout proved to be the game winner as Gwinnett knocked oFf the Columbia Inferno 4-3 in a shootout on Friday night at the Carolina Coliseum. Gwinnett improves to 33-17-6 on the season with the win.
Columbia took a 1-0 lead midway through the first period, as Jeff Miles was able to roll the puck past Gladiators netminder Dave Caruso. Miles worked into the Gladiators zone on a 2-on-1 break with Mac Faulkner before beating Caruso at the 10:15 mark for the tally. Anthony Battaglia also had a helper on the marker for the Inferno.
Columbia took a 2-0 lead 2:47 into the second period. Owen Fussey found a loose puck in a pile up in front of the Gwinnett net and jammed the puck past Caruso for the marker. Brad Ralph had an assist on the marker for Columbia.
Gwinnett got on the board with Joel Stepp's 12th goal of the season at the 8:18 mark of the second period. Stepp moved in on a 2-on-1 break with Chad Painchaud but elected to shoot, beating Columbia netminder Todd Ford to the short side for the goal. Matt York had an assist on the power play goal for Gwinnett.
Luke Fulghum pushed the Columbia lead back to two goals as the ripped a second effort past Caruso from the left wing circle. Chris St. Jacques and Chris Thompson hooked up to post the assists on the extra man goal for Columbia at the 11:08 mark of the second period.
Gwinnett answered at the 13:25 mark of the second period as Matt York deflected Brad Schell's slap shot from the right wing circle past Ford for the goal. Jim Jackson also had an assist on the marker for Gwinnett.
Jamie Milam's 17th goal of the season tied the game at 3-3 with 3:05 left in the middle stanza. Sliding through the slot, Milam took a centering feed from Andy Contois out of the corner before burying the puck past Ford for the marker. Mike Vigilante posted an assist on the goal for Gwinnett.
The teams skated to a scoreless third period and overtime stanza before Gwinnett was able to best the Inferno in the shootout 3 goals to 1. Gwinnett got goals from Scott Mifsud, Jamie Milam and Matt York while Caruso stopped 3 of 4 Inferno shooters for the win.
Gwinnett finished with one power play goal on five chances in the contest while Caruso finished with 33 saves in the win for Gwinnett.
