Steve Smith to speak at Checkers Pucks and Prayers Night

CHARLOTTE- The Charlotte Checkers announced today that Steve Smith and Dr. Norman Geisler will both be speaking at the club's Pucks and Prayers Night to be held after game against the Columbia Inferno on March 31st.

Smith was made available after the Checkers became involved with Athletes United for Youth one of Smith's non-profit affiliations.

The mission of the Athletes United for Youth is "To provide youth services throughout Charlotte-Mecklenburg communities resulting in positive mental attitudes in our children. A strong commitment to building self-esteem, as well as, enhancing academic skills and creating model citizens for life".

The overall goal of Athletes United for Youth is to assist this generation in preparing for a quality future educationally, spiritually and respectfully.

In addition to Steve Smith, Athletes United for Youth is also represented by Jay Bilas and Dell Curry. Both Curry and Bilas have scheduling conflicts that will prevent them from being present at Pucks and Prayers; however they will be well represented via scoreboard video messages.

Steve Smith arrived in Charlotte after playing in college with the University of Utah Utes via the 2001 NFL draft as a 3rd Round 74th overall pick of the Carolina Panthers. Since arriving in Charlotte, Steve has given so much of himself to various youth and/or adult related initiatives, such as conducting an annual coat drive in conjunction with Crisis Assistance Ministries, where he secured hundreds of coats that were given to persons in need. Steve was also involved with providing support to The Courage House-Youth Homes, Inc as well as to Florence Crittenton Agency. Steve and his wife Angie are raising two sons Peyton and Boston and one daughter Baylee.

Dr. Norman Geisler is author or coauthor of over sixty books and hundreds of articles. He has taught at the university and graduate level for forty three years and has spoken or debated in all fifty states and in twenty-five countries. He holds a Ph.D. in philosophy from Loyola University and is the co-founder and Dean of Southern Evangelical Seminary, in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Geisler's professional experience includes the following:

Graduate Assistant in Bible-Philosophy Department, Wheaton College, 1959; Part-time Instructor in Bible at Detroit Bible College, 1959-62; Full-time Assistant Professor of Bible and Apologetics at Detroit Bible College, 1963-66; Full-time Associate Professor of Philosophy at Trinity College, 1970-71; visiting Professor of Philosophy of Religion, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, 1969-70; Chairman of Philosophy of Religion, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, 1970-79; Professor of Systematic Theology, Dallas Theological Seminary, 1979-1988; Dean of Liberty Center for Research and Scholarship, Lynchburg, VA, 1989-91. He is President of Southern Evangelical Seminary, Charlotte, NC, which he co-founded in 1992. National speaker at churches, retreats, pastor's conferences, universities, radio, and television, 1960-present.

The Checkers play the Gwinnett Gladiators at home this Sunday. Game time is 4 PM at Charlotte Bobcats Arena.
