Gladiators Burn Inferno, 3-2

Guillaume Desbiens posted a goal and an assist to help the Gladiators to a 3-2 win over the Columbia Inferno on Monday night at the Carolina Coliseum in Columbia, S.C.

The Gladiators and the Inferno skated to a scoreless tie through the first period as the Gladiators were outshot by the Inferno 8-7 as Sean Fields turned aside all eight shots faced.

Guillaume Desbiens broke the scoreless tie 5:13 into the second period, muscling his way down the right wing circle and ripping a snapshot past Columbia netminder Chris Houle for the tally. The puck just had enough steam to get past the Columbia netminder for the unassisted goal.

Gwinnett took a 2-0 lead 16:56 into the second period on Brad Schell's 10th goal of the year. Hauled down moving to the front of the net, Scott Mifsud was able to roll the puck to a streaking in Schell to set up the tally. Danny Eberly also had an assist on the power play goal for Gwinnett.

Columbia cut the Gladiators lead to a goal with a power play goal off the stick of Leon Hayward 8:24 into the third period. Chris Cava picked up an assist on the goal for the Inferno.

Eric Nelson tied the game at two just 21 seconds after Hayward got the Inferno on the board, sliding the puck past Fields. F.P. Guenette and Dallas Flaman had the assists on the tally for the Inferno.

Steve Slaton scored the game winner for the Gladiators on the power play, picking up a rebound along the goal line and jamming it past Houle 12:30 into the third period. Brad Schell took the initial shot from the slot off a feed from Guillaume Desbiens to pick up the assist on the tally.

Fields finished with 32 saves for Gwinnett in the win to help the Gladiators improve to 14-6-4 on the season. The Gladiators finished with two power play goals in the victory.
