Checkers move into tie for second place in South Division

CHARLOTTE, NC - The Charlotte Checkers played three one-point games last week finishing with a win, a loss and a shootout loss. The Checkers had a three-game win streak snapped last Sunday by the Florida Everblades in 3-4 shootout loss. The Checkers suffered a 2-3 loss to the Johnstown Chiefs on the road Tuesday, but returned home on Thursday to edge out the Augusta Lynx 3-2.

The Checkers finished the week climbing up the South Division standings into a tie for second place with the Gwinnett Gladiators at 30 points. The Checkers and Gladiators sit just five points behind the first-place Everblades (35 points) and just one point ahead of the fourth-place Columbia Inferno (29 points).

Sunday, December 18, 2005 vs. Florida, L, 3-4 (shootout) The Florida Everblades edged the Charlotte Checkers 4-3 in a shootout Sunday in front of 4,190 fans at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena. Bogdan Rudenko and Kevin Bergin each scored for Florida in the shootout, which went to a sixth shooter.

Bergin was named the First Star of the game after scoring a goal during the first period and in the shootout. Ernie Hartlieb also scored for the Everblades and was named the Second Star of the game. Charlotte's Mike Bayrack was named the Third Star of the game after a two-goal, one-assist performance.

Tuesday, December 20, 2005 @ Johnstown, L, 2-3 A stretch of five games in seven days and four games in five days may have finally caught up with the Charlotte Checkers Tuesday night in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. The Chiefs built a two-goal lead and hung on to defeat the Checkers 3-2 at the famous Cambria County War Memorial.

Dmitri Tarabrin's goal in the second period at 11:32 proved to be the game-winner. Jake Ortmeyer and Brandon Cullen scored for the Checkers, while Charlotte goalie Bernd Bruckler suffered his first loss yielding the three goals and making 24 saves.

Thursday, December 22, 2005 vs. Augusta, W, 3-2

The Charlotte Checkers survived a late-game push by the Augusta Lynx to pick up a 3-2 win Thursday night in front of 4,889 fans at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena. Brandon Cullen was named the First Star of the game after scoring an unassisted goal and notching an assist.

The Checkers effectively killed a penalty which was called at the 17:47 mark of the third period to secure the 3-2 win. The Checkers not only killed the penalty, but survived a Lynx two-man advantage as Augusta pulled their goalie at the 18:48 mark of the third period.
