Bakersfield Condors News Release
BAKERSFIELD, Calif., - Dave Bonk scored in his debut with the Bakersfield Condors, but the Las Vegas Wranglers' three second period goals were the difference in the Condors' 3-1 loss in front of 5,340 at the Rabobank Arena.
Bakersfield (9-10-4, 22 pts) came out on the aggressive and saw immediate dividends from newcomer Dave Bonk. Bonk, acquired from Columbia on Wednesday, followed a charge by defenseman Kevin Truelson on the right wing side. Truelson left just enough on a pass to Bonk to leave it at the top of the slot, where Bonk threw it past the right side of Las Vegas netminder Marc Magliarditi to give the Condors a 1-0 lead at 6:54 of the first period.
The Wranglers (21-4-2, 44 pts) tied things up at the 2:10 mark of the second period, when Derek Edwardson poked a turnover towards Condor ice and led a two-on-one with Charles Linglet. Edwardson wrested a shot past Ryan Munce's blocker to knot the game at 1-1 early in the second.
Edwardson would factor into the go-ahead goal over four minutes later when he fed Darren Lynch, who sent a one-timer from the top of the slot beyond Munce's left pad. Lee Green assisted on the play, putting the Wranglers on top 2-1 with over 13 minutes remaining in the period.
A Las Vegas late-period power play would open up a chance for Charles Linglet to contribute. Linglet took a pass at the point from Edwardson and fired a slapshot through traffic and past Munce's right shoulder. Marco Peluso won the faceoff to Edwarson, earning an assist as the Wranglers extended their lead to 3-1 heading into the third period.
Both teams had their chances, including a late four-on-four in which Bakersfield aggressively peppered shots on Magliarditi in an attempt to cut the lead. The Condors would throw one final attempt towards the Wranglers as they pulled Munce with over two minutes left, but were forced to send him back onto the ice following a Scott Basiuk slashing penalty.
Marc Magliarditi earned the win, stopping 26 shots on 27 attempts. Ryan Munce was credited with the loss, making 33 saves on 36 Wrangler shots.
Other notes: The Condors loss was the first at home in regulation this year. Bakersfield sports a 6-1-3 record at Rabobank Arena this season. The 24 combined penalty minutes was the fewest recorded in a Condors game this year.
The Fresno Falcons come to town on Friday, December 30th, with national Christian performer Paul Wright presenting a concert in conjunction with the game courtesy of Telemundo 11, KDUV 100.1 and Island Styles. The showdown with Fresno will also kick off the annual Condors Fight Cancer Hockeython, featuring 27 straight hours of hockey at the Arena and the Bakersfield Ice Sports Center, presented by Bright House Networks and KUZZ 107.9. The Hockeython will feature a Condors legends game featuring past Condors such as Kevin Barrett, Paul Rosebush, Glen Mears, Steve Dowhy, Kevin Barrett and others at 5pm on December 31st, followed by the Condors match-up with the Stockton Thunder at 7pm.
