Gantt Drives in Two More in Walk-Off Loss

July 29, 2013 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release

Lansing, MI - Kellen Sweeney's walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning secured a 6-5 walk-off win for the Lansing Lugnuts (45-60, 13-23) over the Bowling Green Hot Rods (63-42, 24-13) on Monday night at Cooley Law School Stadium. Marty Gantt and Luke Maile each drove in two runs in the defeat as the Hot Rods lost for just the ninth time in July. The Lugnuts pounded out nine extra-base hits in the win.

After scoring four runs in the first inning on Sunday, the Bowling Green bats were at it again on Monday night. Andrew Toles and Tyler Goeddel began the game with singles and then promptly stole the third and second base, respectively, during the Maile at bat. Maile then lifted a soft line drive into left field to score both runners. Gantt doubled home a run later in the inning, and the Hot Rods led 3-0 after just one half inning.

The Lugnuts battled back with three runs in the bottom of the second inning to tie the score, but Toles worked a hit-by-pitch with one out in the fourth inning and advanced to second base on an errant pickoff throw from Lansing starter Ben White. With Goeddel still at the plate, White delivered a wild pitch that bounced far enough away from Lansing catcher Santiago Nessy that Toles scored from second base.

Using a Dalton Pompey solo home run, Lansing tied the score again in the bottom of the fifth at 4-4. In the top of the seventh, a two-out rally allowed the Hot Rods to retake the lead. Leonardo Reginatto singled to the mound on a bunt, which was followed by a Joey Rickard walk. After a lengthy at bat, Gantt bounced a 3-2 pitch up the middle to score Reginatto for the go-ahead run.

Gantt's late heroics ended up not being enough as the Lugnuts scored in each of the last two frames to walk-off to the win. In the bottom of the ninth, Sweeney singled home Chris Hawkins after his leadoff triple.

The start of a four-game home-and-home series with the Dayton Dragons (Reds) begins Tuesday night at 6:00 PM CDT at Dayton's Fifth Third Field. The Hot Rods will send LHP Blake Snell (3-7, 4.14) to the mound to oppose the Dragons RHP Nick Travieso (5-3, 5.24). The broadcast starts with Hank Fuerst on the Forever Communications Pregame Show at 5:35 PM CDT on the Hot Rods Radio Network (1340 "The Ticket" WBGN-AM and 1340wbgn.com).

Bowling Green Ballpark returns to action in early August with a nine-game homestand to open the month. The Hot Rods will host the Dayton Dragons on August 1 along with Red, White, and Blue Night presented by AAA Systems, honoring members of the military, firefighters, and police personnel. The game will also serve as Thirsty Thursday, with $2 food and drink specials made possible by All-Hit WUHU 107 and Beaver 96.7.
