West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

SOUTH BEND, IN - Edgar De La Rosa threw six strong innings and Dean Green drove in three runs as the West Michigan Whitecaps won the rubber match of a three-game series, 4-3, over the South Bend Silver Hawks on Monday afternoon at Coveleski Stadium.

The West Michigan (18-17, 51-54) batting lineup left 15 runners on base and struck out 15 times, but scratched across just enough offense to improve their second-half record above the .500 mark. South Bend (21-16, 65-41) rallied late with single runs in the eighth and ninth but the Whitecaps' bullpen hung on for the victory.

De La Rosa (6-4) earned the win with a second consecutive quality start, tossing six impressive innings and allowing just one run. He gave up five hits - three of which were by Midwest League hits leader Brandon Drury - with three strikeouts and two walks. De La Rosa used a pair of early double play balls to escape trouble and then finished strong by retiring nine of the last 10 batters that he faced.

Meanwhile, the Whitecaps' offense was able to squeeze just enough out of their numerous scoring opportunities to pick up the win. West Michigan left the bases loaded three times and stranded at least one runner aboard in each of the first six innings. The plethora of opportunities came primarily from a series of self-inflicted mistakes by South Bend that included six walks, four hit batsman, one error and a pair of strike-three wild pitches.

Green Started the scoring with an RBI-double in the first, one of just two hits in 14 at-bats with runners in scoring position. The ‘Caps added to the lead with bases-loaded walks to Jake Stewart in the third and Green in the fourth, while Green added a sixth-inning sacrifice fly that gave West Michigan a 4-1 advantage.

The proved to be just enough cushion for the relief corps.

After De La Rosa's departure, Chad Smith threw a perfect seventh inning before Angel Nesbitt gave up consecutive doubles in the eighth that cut the lead to 4-2.

In the ninth, closer Corey Knebel was touched for a one-out double by Roidany Aguila followed by a run-scoring single by Alex Glenn. Suddenly, the lead was just 4-3 with the potential game-tying run on base. Knebel responded by inducing a fielder's choice groundout before striking out pinch-hitter Michael Perez to clinch his ninth save in as many tries.
