Tigers Trade Vasquez For Bullpen Help

July 29, 2013 - Midwest League (MWL1)
West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The Detroit Tigers picked up the bullpen help they were looking for on Monday, trading West Michigan Whitecaps' outfielder Danry Vasquez to the Houston Astros for right-handed reliever Jose Veras.

The Tigers will also send the Astros a player to be named later on or before September 15 in exchange for their Major League closer.

Vasquez, a 19-year-old outfielder from Venezuela, was hitting .281 with five home runs and 39 RBI in 96 games for the Whitecaps this season. He also smacked 16 doubles, scored 46 runs and stole nine bases as West Michigan's everyday left fielder. Vasquez's highlights this season include a 5-for-5 game on June 16 and a nine-game hitting streak from May 23-June 1.

Rated by Baseball America as the No. 6 prospect in the Tigers' organization prior to the start of the 2013 season, Vasquez originally signed with Detroit for $1.2 million in 2010. According to the publication's scouting report, he "has an advanced approach at the plate and good pitch recognition for his age. He has explosive bat speed and a compact, balanced swing... He shows advanced feel for driving pitches the other way and has power to all parts of the park."

Vasquez's status as a prospect is reinforced by his trade for a proven Major Leaguer.

Veras, 32, is in his eighth season in the Majors and was in his first year with Houston. Serving as the Astros' closer, the 6-foot-6, Dominican right-hander had 19 saves in 22 opportunities and a 2.93 ERA. In 43 innings of work, Veras had 44 strikeouts and just 14 walks while holding opposing hitters to a paltry .192 batting average.

The journeyman reliever has spent his eight-year career with six different teams, making 369 relief appearances with the New York Yankees, Cleveland Indians, Miami Marlins, Pittsburg Pirates, Milwaukee Brewers and, most recently, the Astros. His lifetime 19-21 record is accompanied by a 3.88 ERA and 372 strikeouts over 357.1 innings.

The Whitecaps wrap up a three-game road series against the South Bend Silver Hawks at 1:05 p.m. on Monday afternoon at Coveleski Stadium. RHP Edgar De La Rosa (5-4, 6.33) is scheduled to pitch for West Michigan against RHP Blake Perry (6-4, 3.73) of South Bend. The next home game at Fifth Third Ballpark will be on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. featuring the popular Dime Dogs promotion in which hot dogs are available for just 10 cents apiece. Group and individual tickets can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps front office at 616-784-4131 or visiting www.whitecapsbaseball.com.
