Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
Dayton, OH - The Dayton Dragons, a team that had not beaten the TinCaps in its first six tries this year, snatched a 3-2 win from Fort Wayne Monday night, earning a sweep of the three-game series at Fifth Third Field.
Dayton (21-16, 49-57) once again used a late-inning effort to defeat the TinCaps, just as it had Sunday afternoon. The TinCaps took a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth inning on a Maxx Tissenbaum RBI single. That one run put Fort Wayne (12-23, 55-49) starter Joe Ross in line for a victory. The 20-year-old righty tossed five scoreless innings, marking the second time in his last three starts he has not allowed a run. He allowed six hits, walked three and fanned three.
Despite his effort, the Dragons scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning against TinCaps reliever Joe Church (1-2). Beau Amaral, who hit a grand slam in Sunday's Dayton win, hit an RBI single, as did Jesse Winker, giving the Dragons a 2-1 advantage. The home team scored again in the seventh inning as catcher Joe Hudson plated Daniel Pigott, who led off with a double against reliever Jorge Guzman.
A comeback attempt by the TinCaps was short-lived, as it contained just an eighth inning solo home run from Tyler Stubblefield. It was the infielder's fourth home run of the season, and his second in the last 12 days. That was one of just six hits for the TinCaps, who did not pick up a base hit until Stubblefield hit a single in the fourth inning.
Dragons closer Michael Lorenzen, who picked up a save in Saturday's game, entered in the ninth, striking out Gabriel Quintana to start the inning. Luis Domoromo followed with an infield single, and was pinch-run for by Mallex Smith, who leads the team with 42 stolen bases. Before Smith could have a chance to display his speed, the game was over. Luis Tejada, the next batter, swung at the first pitch he saw and grounded into a game-ending double play.
The sweep at the hands of the Dragons marked just the fourth time this season the TinCaps have been swept. It also is the first time the team has lost four straight games since July 1-4.
Fort Wayne returns home Tuesday night for the start of a split four-game series. The first two games against Lake County will be played at Parkview Field, with the latter half of the set to take place in Eastlake, Ohio.
Tuesday's first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM, and the scheduled starters are Walker Weickel for Fort Wayne and Jake Sisco for Lake County. The game can be seen on XFINITY 81 and heard on The Fan 1380 and TheFanFortWayne.com.
