Kane County Cougars News Release
PEORIA, Ill. - A record was set by Kane County Cougars pitcher Jose Rosario, but it was not a glamorous one as the Peoria Chiefs triumphed in a 14-1 trouncing to claim the three-game series on Monday night at Dozer Park.
Rosario (0-7) surrendered four consecutive singles with one out in the bottom of the first which plated the first two tallies of the night for the Chiefs (57-46, 19-17). Ildemaro Vargas added a two-run single in front of a run-scoring double off of the bat of Jeremy Schaffer to put Peoria up by five.
An error by Giuseppe Papaccio and a Charlie Tilson single put the first two men on base for the Chiefs in the bottom of the second for Breyvic Valera. With the runners going, Valera hit a liner to short that Papaccio caught on a leaping try which began an easy 6-4-3 triple play to end the threat.
No such luck for the Cougars (40-61, 10-25) in the next few innings as Rosario coughed up four in the bottom of the third. Schaffer drove in a run with a fielder's choice while Gerwuins Velazco cracked a three-run homer to make it a 9-0 contest. Three more for Chiefs came across in the fourth as Patrick Wisdom unloaded the bases with a double down the right field line to bring home all three baserunners.
Rosario let up one more run in the fifth before departing with a franchise record 13 runs allowed, all of them earned. Dan Vogelbach cranked a home run against Thomas Lee (4-1) in the top of the sixth for Lee's only blemish. Peoria's starter gave up just three hits. Al Yevoli allowed a run in his 2.1 innings of relief for the Cougars. Dixon Llorens (S, 7) was the only reliever used by the Chiefs as he worked 3.1 shutout frames.
The Cougars return to Fifth Third Bank Ballpark on Tuesday night to take on the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers at 6:30. Right-hander Justin Amlung (4-4) will start for the Cougars against fellow righty Eric Semmelhack (1-6). For tickets, please call (630) 232-8811 or visit www.kccougars.com.
