Lansing Lugnuts News Release

LANSING, Mich. - Kellen Sweeney's walk-off single in the ninth inning gave the Lansing Lugnuts (13-23, 45-60) a dramatic comeback win, 6-5, over the Bowling Green Hot Rods (24-13, 62-43) on Monday night at Cooley Law School Stadium.

With the game tied 5-5 entering the ninth inning, Chris Hawkins tripled on the first pitch of the inning off Hot Rods' reliever Jose Molina (Loss, 3-3), his second three-bagger of the night. Sweeney followed by hitting a ground ball fair inside the bag at third base and into left field to score Hawkins and give the Lugnuts their third walk-off win of the season, clinching their first series against Bowling Green on the season.

The Lugs battled back to tie the game three times, overcoming deficits of 3-0, 4-3, and 5-4 before walking off with a win.

After the Hot Rods took an early 3-0 lead in the first, Lansing responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the second. Dalton Pompey's second homer of the season in the fifth inning brought the Lugs back into a tie after trailing, 4-3, and Santiago Nessy doubled home Christian Lopes in the bottom of the eighth, sending the game into the ninth knotted up, 5-5.

Pompey finished the night 2-for-4 with a homer and a double - one of six doubles in the game for Lansing, a team season-high. Meanwhile, Lopes doubled twice himself in a 2-for-4 game, extending his hitting-streak to seven straight games.

Lansing starter Ben White battled through six innings, settling down after allowing three runs in the first inning. In total, the 24-year old allowed four runs - all earned - on seven Hot Rods' hits. He struck out four while issuing three walks. Ian Kadish (Win, 4-3) pitched a scoreless top of the ninth to earn the win.

Matt Spann also took a no-decision in his start for Bowling Green. In just his third start of the season, Spann allowed four runs - three earned - on eight hits over 5.2 innings. The southpaw did not issue a single walk and struck out three.

The Lugnuts now welcome the South Bend Silver Hawks to start a four-game split series, with the first two contests to be played in Lansing to close out an eight-game homestand. Daniel Norris (0-6, 5.46) will start for Lansing with first-pitch set for 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday night. South Bend will hand the ball to Brad Allen (5-6, 5.40).
