Peoria Chiefs News Release

Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs knocked former Chiefs pitcher Jose Rosario around Dozer Park Monday night while setting a season high in hits and runs in a 14-1 whitewash of the rival Kane County Cougars. The series-clinching win moved the Chiefs to 57-46 on the year and 19-17 in the second half while the Cubs-affiliated Cougars fall to 10-25 in the half and 40-61 overall.

The Chiefs set the tone with five runs in the first inning against Rosario who made 20 starts for the Chiefs in 2012. With one out Charlie Tilson reached on an infield single and made his way to third on a passed ball and throwing error by catcher Wilson Contreras. Breyvic Valera drove in Tilson with a single and stole second. He came around to score on a Jacob Wilson base-knock, and Patrick Wisdom moved Wilson to second with a single. Both runners moved up a base as Nick Martini grounded out to first and a single up the middle by Ildemaro Vargas gave the Chiefs a 4-0 lead. Jeremy Schaffer knocked in Vargas with a double, but was stranded at second after Gerwuins Velazco grounded out, ending the frame with the Chiefs up 5-0.

The Chiefs put two on in the second inning on an error and a single but didn't score as Kane County turned a 6-4-3 triple play to escape the inning. With both CJ McElroy and Tilson on the move, Valera lined the ball toward left-center but Giuseppe Papaccio made a leaping catch, flipped to second and Gioskar Amaya threw to first to complete the triple play.

The Chiefs poured on four more runs in the bottom of the third inning. With one out Wisdom doubled, while Martini and Vargas walked to load the bases. Wisdom scored as Schaffer grounded to third base and Jeimer Candelario touched third for the force out rather than attempt the double play. With two outs Velazco hit his first home run of the season, driving in Vargas and Schaffer to put the Chiefs up 9-0.

The Chiefs continued the scoring barrage with three runs in the fourth inning. Tilson led off with an infield single and moved to second on a Valera base-knock. Wilson walked to load the bases, and a Wisdom two-bagger brought everyone home to give the Chiefs a 12-0 lead.

With Rosario surprisingly still in the game, the Chiefs added to their lead with a run in the fifth inning. Velazco led off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch and move to third on flyout. With Al Yevoli pitching Velazco scored on a Valera single, extending the Chiefs lead to 13-0

The Cougars finally broke through against Thomas Lee in the sixth inning, as he held the Cougars scoreless through 5 2/3 innings in his first start of the season. With two outs in the sixth, Dan Vogelbach hit his 16th homer of the year to put the Cougars on the board. Dixon Llorens came in for Lee and shut down the Cougars from there, tossing 3 1/3 scoreless innings to earn his seventh save.

The Chiefs reached a new season high in hits and runs in the seventh inning. Velazco walked with one out and was forced at second on a grounder off the bat of McElroy. Tilson and Valera both reached on infield singles to load the bases with two outs. Trevor Martin singled to left for a 14-1 lead as the Chiefs picked up their 17th hit.

Lee (4-1) earned the win in his first start of the season, filling in for an injured Cory Jones. Lee gave up one run on three hits and no walks while fanning three in 5 2/3 innings pitched. Llorens tossed 3 1/3 scoreless innings giving up one hit while striking out four.
