Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - A pair of runs in the 8th inning gave the Kernels a 4-3 comeback win over the Clinton LumberKings on Monday night.

The Kernels tacked on two runs in the 1st inning to take an early 2-0 lead. With two outs, Max Kepler hit a line smash in the right center field gap for a double that scored Jonathan Murphy and Jorge Polanco.

Clinton got on the scoreboard in the 4th. Taylor Ard tripled to lead off the frame and scored one batter later when Gaby Guerrero grounded out to short.

Two innings later, the LumberKings put together a 2-out rally. Guerrero drew a walk, Tim Lopes doubled, Guerrero scored on a wild pitch, and then Martin Peguero singled home Lopes to make it a 3-2 Clinton advantage.

The Kernels struck back, however. Kepler reached on an error to lead off the 8th and later scored on a wild pitch. Travis Harrison singled in the inning and scored on a high chopper off the bat of Joel Licon, who reached safely on a fielder's choice as LumberKings second baseman Jamodrick McGruder's throw home was not in time to give the Kernels a 4-3 lead late in the contest.

Kernels starter Jose Berrios exited after 6 innings, allowing three runs on five hits while walking three and striking out two. Berrios registered a no-decision. Alex Muren recorded the victory out of the bullpen as he went 2 scoreless innings. Muren (6-1) got out of a jam in the 8th when the LumberKings left two on base. Brad Gilbert pitched the 9th for his 2nd save of the season.

Rigoberto Garcia went 5 innings in the start for Clinton. Garcia gave up two runs on six hits while walking three and striking out two in his fourth Midwest League start. George Mieses struck out four and did not allow a run in 2 innings of relief. Jochi Ogando allowed the two runs in the 8th inning for the loss. Ogando (0-2) gave up just one hit, though.
