Great Lakes Loons News Release

MIDLAND, Mich. - Corey Seager and Tyler Ogle both hit home runs in the first inning and the Great Lakes Loons (50-57, 23-14) never looked back, cruising to a 9-0 victory over the Lake County Captains (40-63, 17-19) to close out a six-game homestand on Monday night at Dow Diamond. With the win and a Bowling Green loss on Monday night, the Loons are one game back of first place in the Midwest League Eastern Division.

The Seager and Ogle home runs in the first gave the Loons an early 3-0 lead. Seager started the inning with an opposite-field, 357-foot solo home run. After an Aaron Miller single, Tyler Ogle crushed a 1-0 pitch 405 feet to center field that landed on the grass berm in front of the hitter's eye background.

"I was able to get a couple of good pitches to hit and put good swings on them, and luckily, I hit them out," Seager said. "I've been putting in a bunch of extra work with the hitting coach (Mike Eylward) and it's really starting to pay off."

When Seager came back to the plate in the third inning, the bases were loaded and the North Carolina native took advantage, crushing a 420-foot bomb that landed in the Dow Diamond parking lot. Seager, the Dodgers' No. 2 prospect, went 3-for-4 in the game, with two home runs and five runs batted in.

The Loons' early offensive outburst forced Captains starter Luis DeJesus (4-11) from the game after three innings. DeJesus gave up seven runs on six hits to take credit for the loss. DeJesus struck out five and walked two.

Tom Windle, the Dodgers' No. 9 prospect, pitched another gem, holding Lake County scoreless over five innings and allowing just one hit to pick up the win for the Loons. Windle struck out seven and walked one. This is the fourth consecutive start for Windle where he allowed two runs or less and pitched at least five innings.

"Today the strike zone was a little different and it forced me to keep the ball down which led to a lot of ground balls," Windle said. "I wanted to throw a lot of changeups today since the lineup was primarily right-handed. I was also able to get punch outs with my slider by executing what I wanted to do with it, which was to throw it in the dirt and low in the zone."

"When you win a game like tonight, it has to start on the mound," Loons manager Razor Shines said. "Windle went out and shut them down, and then we were able to come in and get things started. I was really impressed with the way that Seager and Ogle swung the bat tonight. Corey's grand slam really got everybody excited. The bullpen was solid throughout. When you pitch and swing the bats like that, there's not much you can say. The guys were tremendous tonight all the way around."

Great Lakes added two more runs in the seventh inning to extend their lead to 9-0. Ogle, who was 2-for-5, doubled to center field to drive in Miller. Ogle came around to score on a Webster Rivas single.

After Felix Sterling gave Lake County three scoreless innings of relief, Cody Penny threw the last two innings, giving up two runs on four hits.

The Loons bullpen pitched the last four innings to preserve the shutout. Rob Rogers gave up three hits in three innings and struck out three. Arismendy Ozoria finished the game, setting the Captains down in order and striking out two. Neither Rogers nor Ozoria issued a walk.

The Loons open a two-game road split with the West Michigan Whitecaps (51-54, 18-17) on Tuesday night. Game time is 7 p.m. Miguel Sulbaran (6-3, 3.27 ERA) is expected to start for Great Lakes. Jake Thompson (1-3, 3.26), the Detroit Tigers' No. 7 prospect is slated to start for West Michigan. The game will be broadcast on ESPN 100.9-FM and ESPN1009.com.

The Great Lakes Loons are a seventh-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers. For tickets and more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
