ABOUT LAST NIGHT: With a four-run, tie-breaking fifth inning, the I-Cubs earned their second consecutive win over the Indians at Victory Field last night, 6-3. After the I-Cubs struck first with a run in the top of the third, the Indians tied the game when Jared Oliva stole third and forced an errant throw by catcher John Hicks. Iowa would add another run in the fourth before Indy matched on an RBI single by Cal Mitchell. With the game tied 2-2 after four, Dixon Machado singled on ground ball into center field following a leadoff double by Trent Giambrone, to score the go-ahead run. An RBI single by Narciso Crook would end the night for starter Mike Burrows before two additional runs came across to build a 6-2 lead. The Indians battled late in the ninth with Mason Martin roping an RBI single to cut the deficit to three runs. Indy had the tying run at the dish with runners on the corners and two out, but the rally fell short when Tucupita Marcano lined out to the shortstop to end the game.

THE HOMETOWN KID: Dillon Peters took the mound for the second appearance of his rehab assignment with Indianapolis last night and surrendered one hit in 2.1 scoreless inning. The Cathedral High School graduate had his rehab transferred from Double-A Altoona to Indy on Monday and tossed 1.0 inning out of the bullpen without allowing a baserunner that night. The 29-year-old was placed on the 15-day injured list on June 6 (retroactive to June 3). In 16 games (four starts) with Pittsburgh to begin the season, he went 4-2 with a 3.86 ERA (11er/25.2ip), 21 strikeouts, 1.17 WHIP and .161 average against. He has held left-handed hitters in the majors to a .103 average (3-for-29) this season.

RESPECT THE HUSTLE: Jared Oliva tied the game at 1-1 in the third inning when he manufactured a run on the basepaths, stealing third base and racing home on an errant throw. It was Oliva's 10th stolen base in 51 games this season, which tied his total in 64 games during the 2021 campaign. Oliva, Ji-Hwan Bae (20) and Oneil Cruz (11) have all recorded double-digit stolen bases, marking the first time since 2018 that three-or-more Indians baserunners have had 10-plus stolen bases (Kevin Newman, 28; Kevin Kramer and Pablo Reyes, 13; Austin Meadows, 11). Bae's 20 stolen bases this season are also the most since Newman's 2018 Team MVP campaign.

FLASH 'STRO: Rodolfo Castro flashed the leather with a spectacular snag in foul territory and went 3-for-4 with a double in last night's loss. It was Castro's first three-hit performance and 10th multi-hit game of the season (three with Pittsburgh). In his last four games, he is hitting .400 (6-for-15) with a home run, a double and two RBI. His last three-hit game came on 9/26/21 at Omaha to cap a stretch of three multi-hit games and be named the Triple-A East Player of the Week following his first four Triple-A games.

BAE'S BACK: After going hitless in three consecutive games, his first such streak since April, Ji-Hwan Bae has bounced back in a big way with multi-hit performances in three of his last four games. He has reached base safely in 60 of his 73 games played and ranks third among all International League qualifiers with a .310 average (87-for-281) this season. Along with batting average, the 22-year-old ranks among league leaders in runs scored (T-3rd, 53), stolen bases (T-4th, 20), hits (5th, 87) and total bases (T-9th, 131).

TONIGHT: Iowa took the series lead with a 6-3 victory yesterday, the Indians will look to even up the series tonight at Victory Field. This is the second series between the two teams this season and the first at Victory Field after Indy took four of six games at Principal Park earlier this year. For the Indians today, Miguel Yajure will take the mound for his seventh appearance (sixth start) in Triple-A this season. Tonight will be Yajure's third career start against the I-Cubs, he is 0-1 with a 2.70 ERA (3er/10.0ip) and nine strikeouts. Countering for Iowa today will be Caleb Kilian, who is 2-0 with a 2.82 ERA (16er/51.0ip). Kilian threw 4.0 one-run innings in his only appearance against Indy on April 27.

JUNE PLAYER OF THE MONTH: The Indianapolis Indians yesterday announced right-handed pitcher Bryse Wilson as their June Player of the Month after he provided a spark to the starting rotation with three wins and three quality starts in four appearances. The 24-year-old went 3-0 with a 2.49 ERA (7er/25.1ip) in June. In all four of his starts, Wilson held the opposition to two runs or less while throwing at least 5.0 innings. He displayed strong command with a 1.03 WHIP - ranking fifth among International League qualifiers for the month - and a 5.25 strikeout-to-walk ratio with only four walks compared to 21 strikeouts. Wilson was Pittsburgh's starting pitcher for the nightcap of today's doubleheader at Cincinnati after tossing a quality start in the big leagues on July 2.

THIS DATE IN 2017: Leading 2-1 after the first inning, the Indianapolis and Gwinnett were in an offensive standstill until the ninth inning. Eury Perez, who finished the day with two stolen bases and his only four-hit game of the season, sent a solo shot to left field to boost the Indians to a 3-1 win. It was Perez's 11th four-hit game of his career and his first since 2015. The only other runs scored by the Indians also came via the home run, with Eric Wood's two-run homer in the top of the first giving them the only run they needed.
