Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
WORCESTER, MA - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (38-43) took down the Worcester Red Sox 5-3 on Thursday night. They have won four of their last five games at Polar Park and have taken a 2-1 series lead.
Worcester ended Krook's scoreless streak at 23.2 innings to open the offensive night, scoring on an RBI double from Johan Mieses in the third inning. The southpaw, coming off a near-perfect game his last time out, tossed six innings of quality baseball, allowing three runs on five hits. Trailing 1-0, the RailRiders rallied with two outs in their half of the fifth inning. Estevan Florial doubled home a run. Oswald Peraza flared an RBI single to center. Derek Dietrich hit a ground-rule double to left to plate a third run. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre sent six batters to the plate with two outs and opened up a 3-1 advantage. The WooSox tied the game at three thanks to a solo homer from Jeter Downs and an RBI infield single from Connor Wong in the fifth. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre would regain the advantage in the top of the seventh after Oswald Peraza brought in a pair with a single off Ryan Fitzgerald's glove at third base to give the RailRiders a 5-3 lead. Peraza drove in three runs in the ballgame. It's his seventh multi-RBI game of the season, tying José Peraza for the team lead.
Jimmy Cordero tossed two shutout innings and was matched by Greg Weissert with a perfect ninth. Weissert, pitching his second-straight night retired the Sox in order for his ninth save of the season. Krook (5-6) came away with his fifth victory, now tying Zach Greene for the team lead. WooSox reliever Josh Taylor (0-2) suffered the loss. It's the first time Worcester has lost consecutive games since June 18.
NEWS & NOTES
FIRST THINGS FIRST - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders return to Polar Park for the final time this season. In the only trip they took here earlier in the season, the WooSox won four-of-six games with SWB winning the last two. After this series, the two will play 12 games all at PNC Field. The WooSox won four-of-six in Moosic last year from August 3 to August 8.
WHERE'S THE POP?- Scranton/Wilkes-Barre has hit just one home run in the first three games of this series, and it came on the second pitch of game one. In the six-game set last week against Buffalo, the RailRiders hit 11 homers (1.83 per game). The RailRiders hit six home runs in their last six-game set at Polar Park this year.
AT THE PAAAAHK - SWB has won four of their last five games at Polar Park, during which they're batting .266 (45-169) with a 2.86 ERA (14 ER in 44.0 IP). With a win today, they would be 5-5 at this yard in 2022.
FIVE AND VIBE - The RailRiders are just five games under .500 for the first time since May 1 when they were 9-14 on the season. They haven't been four games within .500 since April 30 (9-13).
KEEP YOUR ENEMIES CLOSE - In SWB's 38 wins this season,15 have come while either shutting out or allowing the opposition to score just one run. The RailRiders have played in 26 one-run games. They are 12-14.
COMO LA FLOR - Estevan Florial led off Monday's opener with a solo homer on the second pitch of the game from Geoff Hartlieb. He has now hit the last three first inning leadoff home runs for the RailRiders including July 2 against Buffalo (vs Bowden Francis) and September 14 against Lehigh Valley (Colton Eastman). Florial has homered five times in his last seven games. He had hit five home runs in all of May and June combined. He has a hit in 23 of his last 26 RailRiders games.
OLDER, WEISSER(T) - Greg Weissert leads the team with nine saves in ten opportunities. Nine saves are the most he's tallied in a single season of his career. He has been asked to gather four outs in three of those saves including in the Tuesday opener last week against the Bisons. Weissert's only blown save this year came on June 8 on the road against the Syracuse Mets. He has made ten-straight scoreless outings. In the previous eight SWB seasons (since 2013) only two pitchers have had double-digit saves.
KEEPING UP WITH THE CABRERAS -Infielder Oswaldo Cabrera is on a Minor League rehab assignment with the Tampa Tarpons. He has since played three games, two with Tampa and one in the Complex League. He has gone 1-for-9 with two RBIs so far in his rehab. Cabrera has been held out of game action with a right shoulder issue since May 8. He played 22 games with SWB before being shut down.
STREAKY - Estevan Florial is on an eight-game hitting streak... Miguel Andújar is on a four-game hitting streak... Oswald Peraza is on a 17 game on-base streak... Jake Bauers is on an eight-game on-base streak...
*SQUIDWARD VOICE* FUUUTUUURE - It was announced Thursday that Ken Waldichuk will be a member of the American League team at the 2022 Future's Game taking place on July 16 at Dodger Stadium, the 23rd annual contest. He is the 22nd RailRider in franchise history to be named to the team and the tenth pitcher all-time. He joins the likes of Deivi García (2019), Domingo Acevedo (2017/2018), Luis Severino (2014), Héctor Noesí (2010), Manny Bañuelos (2009), Joba Chamberlain (2007), Phil Hughes (2006), Gavin Floyd (2003/2004) and Brett Myers (2001/2002). Anthony Volpe and Jasson Dominguez will also be representing the Yankees this year.

AROUND THE ORGANIZATION - The New York Yankees (60-23) edged past the Boston Red Sox 6-5. Josh Donaldson hit a grand slam. Nestor Cortes faces Connor Seabold tonight at 7:10 PM in game two of the series... The Somerset Patriots (48-30) shut out the Bowie Baysox 5-0. Will Warren struck out five in seven shutout innings. Luis Medina starts tonight at 7:05 PM... The Hudson Valley Renegades (41-37) won their fifth straight with a 7-1 victory over the Jersey Shore Blue Claws. Trey Sweeney gave the team the lead with an RBI double as a part of a four-run third inning. Beck Way starts tonight at 7:05 PM... The Tampa Tarpons won 3-2 in a rain-shortened six-inning game. They were slated to play a doubleheader. Juan Carela was on the mound for game one of a doubleheader today at 4:00 PM with Richard Fitts on for game two...
