
Rally Falls Short in 7-5 Defeat against Norfolk

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Despite falling behind 6-0 early Thursday, Jacksonville's comeback attempt was able to bring the winning run to the plate in the ninth, but the Jumbo Shrimp came up just short against the Norfolk Tides in a 7-5 loss at 121 Financial Ballpark.
Norfolk (40-41) were the first to get runs on the board in the top of the first. Terrin Vavra doubled on a ground ball to left field, then advanced to third off a single from Jordan Westburg. Another single by Gunnar Henderson plated Vavra and advanced Westburg to second, setting the score 1-0. After a strikeout by Jumbo Shrimp starter Bryan Hoeing (6-4), Yusniel Diaz struck a fly ball single to left field, loading the bases. Rylan Bannon struck a line drive single, scoring Westburg and keeping the bases loaded with a 2-0 lead. A walk by Richie Martin plated Henderson to make it 3-0.
The Tides added insurance runs in the top of the second inning. Anthony Bemboom doubled on a flyball out to left field. He advanced home on a line drive single to center by Vavra to widen the gap to 4-0. Westburg doubled and moved to third on the throw home when Vavra scored. Kyle Stowers then plated Westburg with a single out to right field to for the 6-0 advantage.
Jacksonville (43-38) added their first run to the board at the bottom of the third. With one out, Ryan Lavarnway walked against Tides starter Chris Vallimont (2-1) and then advanced to third on a double by Luis Aviles Jr. A sacrifice fly by Brian Miller brought in Lavarnway to get the Jumbo Shrimp on the board..
The Jumbo Shrimp shortened the deficit in the bottom of the fourth inning. Jerar Encarnacion singled to center field. After a flyout, Peyton Burdick blasted a two-run homer out to left field, slicing the margin to 6-3.
The Jumbo Shrimp further closed the gap in the bottom of the sixth. Lewin Díaz smacked a single-run homer out to right field, reducing the deficit down to two at 6-4.
The top of the ninth saw Norfolk add one last insurance run. After two strikeouts and two consecutive walks of Diaz and Bannon, a single by Martin plated Diaz to make it 7-4.
Jacksonville went down fighting in the bottom of the ninth. With two outs on the board, Burdick singled and went to second on defensive indifference. Erik González then struck a ball to right field, allowing Burdick to advance home to set the final margin at 7-5. Lavarnway followed with a base hit to bring Aviles Jr. to the plate as the winning run, but the Jumbo Shrimp second basemen flew out to right to end the game.
The quartet of Tommy Eveld, Jake Fishman, Jeff Brigham and Robert Garcia combined to yield just one run in 7.2 innings out of the Jumbo Shrimp bullpen.
Jacksonville hosts Norfolk at 7:05 p.m. on Friday from 121 Financial Ballpark. RHP Nick Neidert (1-0, 1.80 ERA) starts for the Jumbo Shrimp. Coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. on MiLB.tv, ESPN 690 and ESPN690.com.

Jumbo Shrimp staff and players will wear red each Friday to support the military, and fans who wear red save $1 on their ticket at the Miller Electric Box Office or can donate the $1 to charity. On a Friday Night Lites presented by Miller Lite, fans can enjoy $2 12 oz. Miller Lites and $1 off craft beers from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Craft Cave. Finally, fans are encouraged to stick around after the game for Friday Night Fireworks.
