Fresno Grizzlies News Release
Behind a strong pitching performance, the New Orleans Baby Cakes (31-35) bounced back Thursday night with a 4-1 win over the Fresno Grizzlies (39-27). Three pitchers combined to strike out 11, allowing only six hits and one run. Starter Jarlin Garcia went four and one-third scoreless innings, whiffing four. Odrisamer Despaigne (1-0) enjoyed the decision after hurling two plus frames and Javy Guerra finished off Fresno, earning his first save.
After trading punches back-and-fourth, the Grizzlies drew first blood in the top of the sixth. With two outs, Tim Federowicz and Derek Fisher singled, putting runners on the corner. Then, Nick Tanielu knocked a third consecutive single into center, making it 1-0.
Half an inning later, New Orleans regained a 3-1 advantage behind five hits. A double to left by Scott Van Slyke plated a pair. Then, Rafael Ortega dented a single to left, scoring Tomas Telis.
The three-run sixth ended the night for Fresno starter Cy Sneed (6-3, loss). He lasted five and one-third innings, scattering seven hits, three runs (earned), walking one and fanning six. Four of his six strikeouts came on the first batter he faced in each frame.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Baby Cakes added a fourth run thanks to an error, the final blow.
Buddy Boshers punched out three batters and Andrew Thome threw up a zero in one and one-third innings for the Grizzlies.
Fresno falls to 4-5 in three-run affairs and 2-19 when recording three runs or less.
Both teams finish the series Friday night from Shrine on Airline. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 PT. Grizzlies RHP Mike Hauschild (4-5, 4.68) and Baby Cakes RHP Zac Gallen (4-2, 3.43) are the probable pitchers.
