Idaho Steelheads News Release

Bakersfield, CA - Blake Forsyth scored his fifth goal of the season with just 5:08 left in regulation and Steve Silverthorn turned aside 31 shots, as the Steelheads downed the Condors 2-1 at Rabobank Arena on Saturday afternoon.

The win allowed the Steelheads (17-11-7) to finish their seven-game road trip at 5-2-0, while they also improve to a season-high, six games over .500. Meanwhile the Condors (8-18-6) see their two-game unbeaten streak end as the Steelheads jumped to 19-10-2 in ECHL action against their former WCHL foe.

The Condors got on the board first, snapping a zero-for-42 power play drought, scoring on their first power play of the afternoon at 11:06 of the first period. On the play, Brett Lutes fed the puck into the Steelheads' crease, allowing Mark Derlago to tip the puck through the pads of Silverthorn for his eighth of the season. Sean Venedam got the second helper.

After one period the Condors were out-shooting the Steelheads 13-8 and they led 1-0.

Taggart Desmet tied the game for the Steelheads heading into the break, notching his 12th of the campaign midway through the second period. Colin Sinclair, who had eight points in his previous 10 games, drew the lone assist, as Desmet carried the puck into the offensive zone and snapped a shot over the glove of Condors' goaltender Yutaka Fukufuji (30 saves).

With the game tied at two late in the third period, Jeremy Scherlinck sent a long pass up ice to Forsyth who faked a slap shot from the Condors' left circles and dropped the puck off to Lance Galbraith. Galbraith then stick-handled to the left of Fukufuji before slipping a pass back to a wide open Forsyth and he was able to flip a shot over the right pad of the netminder for his first game-winner of the year.

The final shots favored the Condors 33-32. In the two-game set, Steelheads' goaltenders allowed just two goals on 78 shots, as both Silverthorn and Kellen Briggs, who played last night, earned their eighth victories of the season. For the match, the Steelheads finished zero-for-three on the power play and four-for-five on the penalty kill.

Next up for the Steelheads is a home game on Wednesday, January 9 against the Utah Grizzlies. The puck drops from Qwest Arena at 7:10 p.m. MST. All the action can be heard live on 1350 AM, KTIK "The Ticket" or via the B2 Networks. Don't forget, Steelheads' single-game tickets can be purchased via www.idahosteelheads.com (using the print-at-home feature), by calling 331-TIXS or from the Qwest Arena box office.
