Checkers drop contest to Wildcatters, lose 4-1

Charlotte, N.C. - The Charlotte Checkers battled the Texas Wildcatters for the second time in as many nights and lost by a score of 4-1.

During the first shift of the initial period, John Adams blasted a one-timer from the high slot that beat Checkers netminder Mike Ayers at :39 putting Texas up, 1-0. The Wildcatters would go ahead 2-0 on the power-play after a scrum in the Checkers crease resulted in Moises Gutierrez finding a loose puck and flipping it over the pad of Ayers at 7:01.

In the second stanza, while working the power play the Checkers surrendered a short-handed goal after A.J. Thelen made Charlotte pay on a bad turnover by burying his chance on Ayers and giving the Wildcatters a 3-0 advantage. Later, it was Brandon Benedict on a two-on-one break slamming the puck behind Ayers at 18:12 extending the Texas lead to 4-0.

In the final period, Charlotte would finally get on the board when a shot by Mark Smith was stopped by Texas goalie, Anton Khudobin but the rebound bounced right to Nathan Gillies who fired it in cutting the Wildcatters lead to 4-1. Charlotte would be unable to add any more offense during the period and would lose both of the back to back games in Texas.

Notes: Ayers turned aside 29 of 34 shots while Khudobin stopped 25 of 26...Charlotte went scoreless on six power play chances...Texas had one power play goal in four attempts...The Checkers are winnless in four games against the Wildcatters this season.

The Checkers are in their 15th season of play as a member of the ECHL. Their next home game takes place on Jan. 10 against the Pensacola Ice Pilots. In the team's 14-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 10 times including three consecutive playoff appearances to date.
